The Johnny Bench thread

I thought I would start a thread for Johnny Bench who many consider to be the best catcher of all time. I'll always remember attending a game at Riverfront Stadium on September 17, 1983, "Johnny Bench Night". During the game he hit his 389th and final home run.

He was a 14-time All-Star selection and a two-time National League Most Valuable Player, was the best offensive and defensive catcher of the 1970s, and was a key member of The Big Red Machine, which won six division titles, four National League pennants, and two World Series championships

I missed the feud...what happened and when did Rose reach out to him to make amends? Was it received well by Bench?

With the stuff that has gone on in pro sports all through time, what Rose did was not an eternal baseball sin and he should be in the HoF!

As a catcher growing up, I always admired Bench. Even wore #5 even though my favorite number was #4 (Gehrig). Here are two of my favorites of both Bench and Rose, even though Rose had moved on to Philadelphia.

  • Phil, where was the bottom photo taken? It looks like some Pirate players on the other side... perhaps that was a Spring Training game in Bradenton, FL but I'm not sure if the Pirates played their spring games in Bradenton at that time. Love the Bench stuff!

I believe it was taken in Tampa at spring training 1972.

  • Im gonna start a thread on Manny Sanguillen who was a far superior catcher than old Johnny Bench. The Roadrunner was totally under rated

You should start one. Even if people don't collect the same stuff, most of us like to see what everyone else is doing with their collections.

Great stuff, I love the Bazooka box
Collecting anything and everything relating to Roger Staubach
  • I wonder why the Bazooka box only graded a 6? I am no expert on Bazooka boxes, but it looks perfect to me!

Also, what's a Bench thread without a rookie:

I recently sent these Bench postcards to PSA after receiving a response from them that they would grade them.

Great thread. Reds' uniform is a favorite of mine & shows up well in photos...I never did care for the giant lettering on the back of jersey though...may have been good for Rose and Bench but not Concepcion...
    Enjoy your collection!

The owner of this Bench Shillito's cards is a sports memorabilia shop in Cincinnati by the name of "Sports Investments". It is in the museum section of the store and is not for sale. I have been trying to find one for a long time.

Thanks for posting. Watching that brings back some memories of watching HEE-HAW as a kid.

I thought I would revive this dormant thread. Anyone pickup any interesting Johnny Bench items recently?
I picked up this very high end 1976 Kroger Cincinnati Reds set. Eventually I would like to get this entire set graded. There have only been a handful of examples from this set graded so far. Paper thin cards and condition sensitive.
