Hey, check out my box!

image
So, ive decided to start working on putting some graded, and obviously non-graded too, card boxes together.
I saw several online that gave me the idea and so I got to working on them.
The first box was just a basic, generic box. The sides of the box are taller than the cards and the lid is attached with hinges

This box will hold roughly 135 SGC slabs. Im sure that is probably closer to 150+ for PSA and maybe 90ish for those BGS monsters

The following box idea came from another collector who said he would like to see a top that was removable and then could be placed under the box.

So, what do you think?
There are still a few tweaks I need to make. But I think I am getting there in terms of quality. For example, I need to use a router and cut hand holds on the sides of the second box. I also want to router out slots for the dividers. Right now on the 2nd box they are just cut really tight and wedged in.

Those look sweet. I think some kind of felt or cushioned lining would be a big plus, though.
  • Looks like the 2nd box got screwed alot.

    Arex,

Great idea...seems a bit too sturday though. What about using 1 x 6 versus 2 x 6 lumber...would be lighter and should still be strong enough.

How about countersinking all those screws ?

That box looks a little haggard, but it does appear to have lots of additional space so things can air out properly before slamming in a few more slabs...

Some of them are standing out and that is something Im going to remedy with a brad gun. Just didnt have one the other day. Im a very novice builder of things and am learning as I go.

    Jeff,
I think 1x6 would do just as well and that is something that I am looking into using the next time. The 2x6 is very sturdy but also heavy. I think that 1x6 would do just as well and be much lighter. If it doesnt seem to be as sturdy then I can add reinforcement pieces on the inside to shore things up a bit.

Yes, I am going to add felt once I get the box design(s) how I want them. I dont want to use up the felt/material until I get that down. would you have felt on underside of the lid too?

Guess that's an aesthetic choice, but I'd go without on the version that's designed to have the lid placeable under the box.

Having that heavy wooden lid rest on the tops of the graded card slabs is a bad idea.

What about if the top and bottom were the same measurements, and the top sat directly on the bottom with no overlap and 1/2 inch of space above the slabs? The top could be held in place by some posts or dowels sticking up from the bottom half, and matching receiving holes on the top half.

    Edited to add diagram.

butt joints are end joints that are not as strong as dado joints (recessed into the wood)

the weight of the slabs will prove to fail the box over time ...

I like your top box, but like someone else has already mentioned, I would like to see it with a thinner design.
What are the measurements for the inside of the box?

Have you thought about making lid that is attached with a hinge?

Either way, nice job. I look forward to seeing your final product.

The box doesnt rest on the slabs. The box is actually resting on the dividers that are placed in there. I didnt want the lid resting on the slabs as I thought that would be a bad idea.

Yes, i actually have the hinges but havent put them on the top box yet.
I am going to go see what I can find in the 1x6 range so the box isnt as physically large.

Someone asked about inside dimensions, I would have to go check my notes on what it is.
