Anything to watch out for if taking Postal Money Order?

Auction winner says someone hacked their PayPal account and wants my address to mail a money order. Anything fishy here?

Auction clearly states PayPal only.

Thanks for looking and/or responding.

Postal Money Orders can be counterfeited, When you get it, take it to the Post Office to cash it before you send out this guys stuff.

If legit he is basically saving you the PP fee.

Like mentioned above make sure it clears.

If you use your bank to cash it and it comes back bogus after the fact, they WILL take funds from your account to recoup their loss.
  • def. cash it at the post office and NOT the bank.

Yes, paper cuts and increased profit.
  • Before ebay made the change to all-paypal, i did 100's of transactions with postal money orders and never had any problems. But i can see why ebay took away that option=more money in ebays pocket.

wasn't there bogus Postal Money Orders coming from Hawaii at one time?

the advice to cash at the Post Office prior to shipping is a great one (take the cash to your bank if you want to do that)

Ebay never went to all paypal. It went to all electronic payments, however sellers can take paper payments they just can't advertise

    that they do.

Some people refuse to use PP or any electronic form for that matter and will only pay by check or money order.

A guy with over 100 PSA sets come to mind..........................And he is like money in the bank.

    Good for you.
  • Thanks to all for the tip about cashing the money order at the PO. I go there anyway, so it's no extra effort or cost.

Good luck. sometimes the PO dont have the money available to cash a $800 money order. So you might have to wait an extra day.

A lot of the times if it is a large amount, just be sure to cash the money order at the post office later in the day. Usually you will have people buying money orders through out the day. In the morning, the till does not have too much money to start with. At least that is the way it is in my area.

You can also use the MO to pay for the postage when you mail his item and any other items you may have and the clerk will give you the remaining money in cash. Just make sure you have valid ID ( Drivers License, Passport etc).

One other comment...as someone else mentioned they often do not have much money on hand early in the day to cash a big MO. If they cant cash it then, at least they can verify that its legit.

I love when people pay by postal order. LMAO at people who refuse to take money orders and demand paypal.
  • My expereince with them has been fine. Just cash them at the post office instead of your bank. My bank denied one because the buyer did not fill out his side of the money order. He simply stuck an address sticker on it instead of writing it out by hand. The bank didn't like it...but the post office could care less.

C & P'd from da USPS website: To verify a postal money order, call the Money Order Verification System at 1-866-459-7822. If you suspect fraud, call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455
  • The only thing I know to watch out for would be disgruntled Postal employees while in the Post Office.
We wouldn't want you to get caught in a crossfire.

I don't have PayPay either, nor do I want it. I have missed a few items because I would ask the seller a question about other payment forms and have been told PayPal only. Oh well, their loss.

  • Just wanted to close the story out. Authentic Postal MO, happy ending. Also wanted to share what the PO told me for how to check authenticity:

Hold up to light and look for watermark (symbol is an eagle, IIRC)
strip from top to bottom should say USPS and be visible from both sides
colors on counterfeits will often run if wetted (maybe try a corner?)

Thanks for all of the advice and help!
