Very cool!!! Most of those have been out of 'circulation' for awhile, eh. #5 is quite unique.
Quarter-Dollar, a cut quarter segment of a Spanish-American 8 Réales, one side countermarked with m raised within a square indent, nearly completely obliterated by tirtila raised within a shaped indent [type II], other side countermarked with three Montserrat designs raised within a shaped indent, 5.57g/85.9 gr (Prid. 46, this coin [Sale, lot 239, this coin]). Coin worn smooth, countermarks fine and an unusual combination, extremely rare £500-700
Is "tirtila" the modern-day Tortola?
Oh, and my wife is not pleased with any new collecting ideas, even if they are "island" themed.

The counterstamp is from Tortola. There are varieties spelled "TIRTILA" and others spelled "TORTOLA". I don't know why.
The Tirtila pieces are contemporary counterfeits/imitations that circulated alongside the officially authorized Tortola stamps. By purposefully mis-spelling the name of the island, the thought was that the makers of these unofficial pieces couldn’t be charged as forgers or counterfeiters.

Interesting, where might I get additional information? Is this published anywhere?
