I have recently, through a friend at work got in contact with a gentleman who has been metal detecting for years. He has agreed to meet me and show me the ropes, tell me all about the laws reporting items and general tips etc. He has also mentioned taking me out to a couple of sites he has permission on.

I can't wait!

I just purchased a second hand (hardly used) Garrett GTAx 550 after reading many reviews and watching this video:

It appears to be a decent machine which is suitable for a beginner.

I started out with a GTAx 550. It was easy to learn and weightwise, not too bad if you put the battery pack on your belt.

I was chatting to the two gentlemen last Sunday and we are going to got out this weekend. One of them showed me some of his finds. He has been detecting for just over 10 years and had a bucket full of finds and a small copper cauldron full of musket balls. He gave me a musket ball to keep when I left. Apparently they are quite a common find. Can't wait to get started next weekend, were hitting a new field they just got permission on.

Had a fun day out today detecting from 7:30am to 15:30pm on a farm field. These were my finds for the day and my first finds ever as a novice:

My latest finds:



The led circular object with a hole in it is a whirl (don't know if I spelt it right). It was used on a stick to spin wool into thread.

A couple of interesting buttons.



(this ones silver plated on the front)


And my best find to date a William III 1697 sixpence N below bust (Norwich mint) with GVLIEMVS error.




I'm going to phone and declare the sixpence to my local archaeologist and mention the the silver button tomorrow.
