Roll of Unc. 56 D Cents

ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,720 ✭✭✭✭✭
Decades ago, I picked up this roll. The coins are all red, MS 65, MS 66 and maybe even better. I don't have to do anything with it, but does anyone have any suggestions? It's certainly worth far more than sheet. My gut feeling is that it doesn't pay to send anything to be graded unless it's MS 67.

Be sure to look at it for D/S OMMs and any RPMs.
The RPM-1 or RPM-8 are great finds worth big bucks in unc grades image

With all due respect, unless that roll was cherrypicked for quality back in the day, and wrapped and sealed...by now youll be looking at a lot of MS62 and MS63 coins.

As another poster suggested though, it is a year know for RPMs so a search may be fruitful.
  • I'll add they'll be inclined to "spot" very easily once you take them out of the roll no matter how you store them. Not all will do that but many of them will and to different degrees. Likewise as regards tarnishing. After a few years out of the roll pick out the interesting or more flattering ones and store them in Mylar 2x2s. The thing to understand is every one of these is unique and will "spot" and/or tarnish differently.
  • I have found way more RPMs in circulated rolls of 1956-D than any other year/mm.
  • Bought a BU roll of 1956-d 2 years ago and found 11 RPM-8's. All came back 64 and 65 RED from ANACS. Not an easy coin to sell though. Bill

  • Make sure you look close for the d/s mintmarks they are worth a high premium.I found 3 in a roll all uncirculated.I would say about $300.00 a piece
  • My mistake on the selling price for the D mintmark with the seperate S mintmark...Right now they are selling for over $600.00 on ebay..Make sure you look for them if you open the roll..

Not true at all, you can find rolls, even from the 30's that are original and gorgeous inside. In fact they can develop what I would call a peach fuzz that accentuates the coins all the better. I made 2 of the 1958 MS67 RDs. One heritage said in the auction "has the look of a higher grade", all from original rolls, and the fact it sat in the roll is what made it gorgeous. I made 1 of the three 52-P's same way, plus a MS68 38-D plus countless other MS67's from 1930-58. All original rolls that were just left to sit, unsealed. Of course if you do that you certainly can ruin them as well, I have seen more than a few that were spotted due to humidity, etc.. It all depends, but most certainly he could have a roll that holds superb GEMs in the original wrapping from 80 years ago. Ask Mr. Blay how he found his MS69 1919. It was an original roll.

I looked at them about nine or ten years ago, and they all looked fresh. Otoh, I did have a roll of 1966 P cents I got from the mint that eventually looked nasty because I did not store them properly.
