That's because man, by nature, is egocentric. We tend to think that the world revolves around us! Everyone is looking at us as well! No seriously. Think about it, we have never seen the world from any other perspective. Even movies that portray the world from other perspectives are seen from our perspective. It is nearly impossible to separate oneself from egocentrism, since we are never separated from ourselves. That's why the gaze of paintings follow us (and coins for that matter.)
