Why do I feel as if I need a bath after I look at coins on eBay?

Tightly sealed rolls of Wheat Pennies, 1909-S VDB found on such and such a date.

I occasionally browse eBay just to see what's selling...I do searches in colonial coins and for certain pedigrees. But I haven't bought a coin on eBay in several years and it would really take a special coin under perfect circumstances to get me to buy on eBay.

Dunno, because there are plenty of collector coins on eBay that auction below, at, or above market each and every day -- just like the real world. Unlike the real world (shop, major auction, or show) you have to put a little more work into filtering out the trash, true enough. But then, those aren't running 24x7, seven days a week, 356 days a year either.

Ebay has a place .... if one really knows the coins, understands how to buy there (i.e. feedback, return policy etc). There are rare opportunities - but not nearly as many as there was 12 years ago. Cheers, RickO

"Go Fish" is a game that's suckered many of us in our lifetimes at one point or another (I'm guilty of getting suckered and trying my hand at it). Very few offerings are laid out on the counter at "eBay" any more. And the ones that are, well ... a guy has to know how to fish.

it boils down to expectations. what do you expect to find on ebay ? whatever you are looking for, there are two dynamics that you have to keep in mind. 1. ebay is not an elite auction house where only the "best of the best" are sold, ebay is more of a garage sale venue. the vast majority of the items listed are things people just want to sell. although there are some really nice things mixed in. 2. the good items go fast. so if you are scrolling for the rare date coin that is listed BIN for 5% of its value, chances are good that someone else already found it. you get out of ebay what you put into it, it takes effort to find the good score. the time it takes complaining here would be much better spent searching for a good score, because once you get a few good scores, you will notice a distict pattern that will lead to to your next good score, and if you pay attention, the scores will keep getting better. the auction you describe shouldnt even have gotten that much of your attention. if it looks like dog crap, and smells like dog crap, do you really need to taste it ?

Other than being frustrated from getting sniped on
almost everything. I have had generally a good experience
over all. I have never made a large purchase at ebay I keep it pretty lite..

sniping is the only way to go. the competeition has NO idea what hit them, they dont even realize they WERE hit until its too late

Stick to Heritage or Teletrade or Bowers and Merena. There are plenty of places to go other than eBay.

I agree. Spend your time wisely.

For me, eBay is fine for old radios, that missing 'rare game bird' radio knob or dial, and interior/trim parts for my old car. In other words, esoteric stuff.

Also, eBay does help me keep an eye out for nice, unmolested Philco Predictas. A beautiful unmolested 19" with the UHF was my last eBay purchase.

Coins? No way. Just read the copious threads here about it. Way too many dishonest people on eBay selling coins.

Finally, eBay bidding policies are totally out-of-whack. The whole 'sniping' thing is ridiculous, and could easily be rectified by allowing auctions to stay open for five minutes after the last bid. Sellers would make better money from their items, and the motivation for sniping would be eliminated. I'm surprised that eBay hasn't implemented this simple change.
