I remember reading this a few years ago, and I just came across the copy I had printed out. The picture alone is worth a thousand words. Pay particular attention to the timeline from Wikipedia that is shown in the article.

Q: Are You Printing Money? Bernanke: Not Literally

I knew it would happen.

I have these two Weimar bank notes from 1923 hanging on the wall of my home office.
The first one is a 100 Million Marks from August 1923. The second is 500 Million Marks from September 1923.
    (Dates corrected)

I have these hanging next to my framed 3 day Woodstock tickets. Everyone who sees them knows something
about Woodstock. (even my teenage daughter). Everybody on the other hand asks about the Weimar Marks

So you're trying to tell us that in a little over 600 years, the currency was devalued by that much?!? Wow. It is pretty amazing to contemplate.

PS: I have some Notgeld tokens from 1922 and 1923 which show a rise from a few Marks to I forgot how many hundreds of thousands of Marks. It's pretty shocking.

My grandmother was 13 years old when this nightmare began. She grew up in Berlin and had a ringside seat.

My Grandfather was a farmer & fruit grower near Heilbron at the time. Grapes, Cherries, Apples & a variety of berries. From the stories that he told, no one used cash or even PM's at the time, business was conducted on a barter basis. His specialty was making "hard apple cider & cherry schnapps."

  • My father was a butcher in Germany at that time. He slaughtered two pigs for a farmer on a Monday and was paid 2 Million Marks. He waited until Friday to spend the money....he purchased two cigarettes. It was soon after this that he left for America.
