Postage Due - anyone else?

on the new peace dollar from CO to TX, 2 qty, first class in legal size letter envelope w/sigconf. left me owing $3.34 at Post Office. DC ain't much of a shipper, it would seem.

was more, I guess, because you can't add sigconf to a package that thin, ed.-w/o going priority?

I have tried to send envelopes and padded mailers first class mail with delivery confirmation. I was told by my local Postmaster that the package must be at least 3/4 inches thick or it has to go Priority Mail. They use a slotted gauge (3/4" opening) and if the mailer or envelope is able to pass through it, it better be priority mail or you pay the difference.

I send them first class with delivery confirmation all the time using bubble mailers that are basically flat???

Some post offices will let these go out that way. The problem is- if somebody else along the way at the post office decides to enforce the rules to the letter (first class needs to be at least 3/4" thick), they can insist that the correct fee be charged, resulting in a "postage due" package for the recipient.

Same here. Received 3 in a #10 First Class, Signature Conformation, postage was about 4.50, no problem.

Yep, all it takes is some officious postal drone with too much time on their hands and that not quite thick enough first class parcel suddenly becomes postage due priority mail.

I took Russ's advice and now include a large styrofoam peanut in my padded envelopes to get the required thickness.

This may have to do with the post office now cracking down on Media Mail, which they will be inspecting to see if it actually meets eligibility, if not then Postage Due will be accrued to the recipeint.

yeah, I'm sure you're not the same desertdweller I've had to deal with on coins...

Never had a problem with 1st Class using DC or SC and a padded mailer that isn't close to 3/4". Of course, I pay the package rate for postage, not the envelope rate.

That won't fly here. The back of the SC slip says:

1. "Available with PM, First Class parcels and Package Service parcels"

and

2. "A parcel ia a box or an item that is more than 3/4" thick at its thickest point"

and my post office insists that both #1 and #2 be followed.

My local PO ladies just told me to stick in a couple of styrofoam peanuts and it'd be cool. Kind of defeats the purpose of the regs, no? Whatever, works for me.

Been doing that for years ... I even have a 3/4" card board cut out, just to make sure the bubble mailer does not fall through it.

I haven't received my DC Peace Dollar yet, but I did receive today a small padded envelope
that was mailed on September 1st from Indiana going to Brooklyn, NY.

The Delivery Confirmation number showed nothing more than "Electronic Shipping Info Received..."
for almost 3 weeks, but now shows that the package went from Indiana to Anchorage Alaska before
it arrived in NY. 18 days to get to Alaska from Indiana, 2 days to get from Alaska to NY.

The USPS is great most of the time, but they always retain the ability of screwing up big time.

I have had this problem when using the APC at the Post Office. I once mailed 3 identical items, and 1 of them came back to my house as insufficient postage. I selected the large envelope option which states it can not be rigid and must be less than 3/4 of an inch thick. When I inquired at the post office, I was told that if the item was in the center of the padded envelope and prevented the envelope from bending in the center, then it might be returned. He recommended putting the item at one end or the other so that it can not migrate to the middle of the package and prevent it from bending.

My guess is that they were sent from an APC and this is what happened.
