Bought a 1970 Topps Set last night

Set a low snipe and barely won it. The price is well below what similar condition sets go for, assuming the cards are close to what the seller says they are. The stars look pretty good in the one crappy picture the seller posted. A VG-EX set is at $500 with 7 days to go and EX-EX/MT sets sell for $900-$1000. I don't think there is any way to lose any money here and a lot of potential upside with a good listing and possibly getting a few graded.

I had my eye on that set run as well but when it went past 650, it became a money loser
Adding the value of the sets 76-84, $700 would've been a decent buy
    76 - 150
    77 - 135
    78 - 100
    79 - 100
    80 - 75
    81 - 35
    82 - 30
    83 - 50
    84 - 25
The sets 85 to 92, if they're not factory, are hardly worth the pages they are in
So by time the lot went to $850 plus $50 shipping, I had lost interest
Seller got a good price on those

When I put together my raw 1970 set (around 1986 or 87), it took me a while to find a nice Mays without the line across the top. Incidently, PSA does not downgrade the card because of that line. Here is an example of a PSA 9 that has the line.

    Edited to add an example.

FYI, I'm building a VG-EX (at best) 1970 set, and I'm about 70-75% of the way there.

If you have cards that you are looking to get rid of because they're lower quality, drop me a PM.

Yeah, that line is super annoying. I've always assumed the Mays was a double print, with half getting the line and half not. Anyone know the real story?

No way was I going to buy a copy with the white line.

There are several cards in the set found with the white line, and I believe they were the cards found on the top row of the sheets

This is maybe the best 1970 Mays I have ever seen. I submitted it raw and it's all there...centering, corners etc. The corners will cut your fingers.

the '66 set is the only set I've never done in the '60's. What would be a good price on a mid grade series 1-6 set? How much would I need to invest in the high numbers?

Series 1 to 6 has a card by card break up value of around $4,400 so whatever percentage of that number you feel comfortable paying based on the condition of the cards is up to you.

Series 7 has a card by card break up value of around $2,400 and even in mid grade the SPs (of which there are many) attract a lot of followers. If you try piecing series 7 together you will easily be over $1,000 on that series alone (and only in mid grade) in no time.

    Hope that helps.

Edited to correct the series 7 value from $2,200 to $2,400.

I found it easier buying graded high numbers in 5 or 6 than raw examples.

I simply cracked them and put them in the binder.

Of course the real tough ones (NL rookies)? were tough that way as well.

    Good for you.
