I take option 'A' all day long. But then, I also wouldn't whine if Ebay caught wind of that and shut down my account. >>

    Boo,
A Little confused!!image Why would E-bay care if you turned down an Off E-Bay deal?

    Neil >>

My bad, Neil-- I meant option 'B'. >>

That's what I figured, just wanted to check, and I agree with what you said. And I will take the responsibility for my actions. Does that mean I am never going to complain about the amounts I pay PayBay, No Never! That doesn't mean I am stomping my feet and acting like a child, just means I have an opinion on a subject and sometimes voice it!!!

    It's not an "honesty/ethics/morals" issue.

"Stealing" from the rich/evil/powerful is "stealing"
that is easy to rationalize/justify; not my concern
unless I am being stolen from.

No matter how much I could steal from EBAY/PP,
it would simply not be worth the risk of getting
    caught and booted, to me.

    Well said, mikeschmidt.

Think of it like a poker establishment.

House A always has a lot of players with deep pockets, well stocked bar/buffet, and it typically resolves disputes in a reasonable time. They factor all of their amenities and take a disclosed cut.

House B is rarely full, offers a couple snacks, and let's the guys duke out problems. Their cut is minimal and you pay for what you get.

    Everyone has a choice.

  • For an non-ebay transaction if you request to be paid by paypal "gift" so you can receive the benefits of their service, i.e., quick payment and almost immediate access to your money but skirt the costs associated with it by using the "gift" function - then you are using the service for free and essentially stealing from them.

That is not what the gift function is for and you know it. It is no justification that you think their service is priced too high and that they are a quasi-monopoly. If you think something is priced too high in a store, does that give you the right to change the price tag or steal it?

Nobody has to use paypal for non-ebay transactions, you choose to when you request payment that way. You should expect and be expected to pay for it.

<< <i>I cannot in good mind and body defend any of Paypal or Ebays nonsense. Anyone who screws them out of even one penny deserves positive feedback and 5 stars across the board.

In all seriousness, Paypal was great BEFORE ebay took it over. Ebay gets a larger cut than ever from sales, paypal gets a cut and then screws honest sellers out of money via the scam artists on ebay. Ebay forces you to use Paypal (even though they say they give you options) so that they can get an extra cut on every sale. Imagine if ebay said they were taking 10% of every sale now plus fees, people would go nuts and stop selling, but since they force you to use paypal, they already are.

It is always cheaper to NOT sell on ebay >>

I would like to make a public apology that I did in fact receive "a" payment through the paypal gift that was for an off Ebay transaction. I will never do this again as I want to pay for the service that they provide. It is a great and noble service that most of us need and use and I am so sorry for the terrible injustice.

Neil you are a friend as is Marc.

He simply was stating his opinion, and how he views the situation.

I did not see where he singled you out.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Steve

Edited cuz It's not my place to tell someone they should apologize.

    Good for you.
  • The problem with not using Ebay/Paypal is finding the buyers takes more legwork for most of the time minimal gain.

That 1000 dollar card that was used most of the time off ebay you may only find a person wanting to pay 750.00 for that same item is that 106.00 worth 250.00 now? Or do you want to sit on that card for a lot longer to sell it for the 1000?

Fact is most buyers feel safe using Ebay/Paypal and won't conduct business online any other way so by not doing that you limit your market.

There is no right or wrong here learn to minimize your fees with Ebay and the costs are actually closer to 14 to 16%. That is really no more than what it would cost you to create your own site with your own merchant account.

As said though if you play with fire by skirting Paypal/Ebay TOS you will eventually get burned by them.

    Afternoon,
And I stand in Disgrace with jimrad as well, head bowed in embarrasment. For I have sinned as he has, and I am now repentant! All Hail the Great PayPal, All Hail !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Steve,

Actually after my rant last night, my little test today wasn't directed at Marc, but was meant to encompass half a dozen in this thread who took the moral high ground.

So anyway, Marc it wasn't personal, and hope we can continue to agree to disagree!!

I'm not preaching about high moral ground. In my opinion, if you use a service, you abide by their TOS, regardless if you agree with it or not. I've bent/broke rules in the past, so I'm not one to judge.

Guess my point is: If constantly break a rule, and encourage others to as well, that benefits the community as a free service, that free service will eventually end.

Life isn't fair but you have a choice. If you don't like eBay/PP's fees, go somewhere else.

  • Guess I am a sinner too and will continue to sin as long as I am allowed to sin. If Paypal doesn't want me to use the gift option then remove it.
  • It's simple, e-mail paypal and ask if it's okay to use the gift function for commerce.
There's no moral high ground, if it's okay it's okay, they'll let you know.

Be careful guys, some of you might fall off your high horses and get hurt.

And for what it's worth, a buyer can pay via Pay Pal gift and pay the fees that the seller would normally get hit with as long as it's drawn from a credit card. No circumventing there.

Since this thread has now turned into a group confessional, what other sins do people need to get off their chests?

Calling all card doctors and pack weighers. Calling all those who talk about pee pees and wees wees more often than they should. Brother Trent should be coming by any time to grant you absolution.

I like to use the standard Paypal payments when buying and selling on ebay.

I like to use the gift option when using Paypal to send and receive money for everything OFF of ebay.

Now, who's side am I on? I'm confused...

Only if you feel like they rip you off by what they charge.

  • << <i>Kind of like shoplifting at WalMart. Is that really a crime? >>

If its more than 50.00 it will get you up to 6 months so I would say it is.

I don't see a problem with it but if you are doing it don't be the one crying when Paypal does away with the option or closes your account.

  • To be perfectly honest I don't care one way or the other. I have paid people that way myself when they request it, and while I do not request people to pay me using that feature there have been people who have done it. All I am pointing out is that while it may suck to have to pay fees, they are providing a service which you have the option not to use. The risk/reward factor is how I look at it. Would I risk getting shutdown by Paypal to save $20? No. Would I take the same risk to save $4,500 in fees on a single transaction? Damn straight I would.
