I know Larry, though not well. Did you get the same email I did, regarding how he can help you get extremely favorable terms on auction consignments, etc.? If so, I can do the same, and I bet my rate is WAY lower.

Q: Are You Printing Money? Bernanke: Not Literally
I first met Larry when he was in charge of wholesaling Heritage's "room full of moderns" (before even Heritage started "caring" about these items) . Well, if you could call them "moderns". Bank wrapped rolls of Lincoln cents from the 1930's, fresh bank wrapped rolls of key date Jefferson nickels from 1938-1964 (I still have the amazing fresh bank wrapped rolls of 1953-S and 1954-S nickels he sold me... they are too cool to even open), amazing silver Washington quarter rolls from the 1930's and 1940's (again, I never opened many of these rolls as the end pieces are just too cool with their gorgeous kaliedescope colors and so on and so forth. Larry also became my auction director at Heritage where I did a couple sizeable deals with him right before he left to work for Superior Galleries as their top auction guy. We also did a couple deals over there before Larry moved on from there. I believe Larry is only working part-time in the coin biz now ... offering his services to educate collectors on consigning their coins to auction and realizing the best terms. What many collectors do not realize is that guys like Coinguy1 (as he so states here), myself and many other dealers out there can get WAY better auction terms than the "standard" rates as a result of the large $$$ volume we do with our favorite auction houses. We can assist collectors with handling their consignments and often times get these collectors a better "rate" than they can otherwise get on their own while earning a fee for ourselves in the process. A "win-win" if the collector is working with someone who can bring "value" to the deal (and there are many ways a skilled dealer can bring value to the table). I believe this is what Larry is now offering his customers while also spending most of his time in another business all together.

Before Heritage he was part owner with Mike Connors of Seattle Rare Coin purchased from Gene Henry. Henry ran his business out of the back room. Connors stayed and Abbott went to Heritage. One funny story Abbott went on cable to sell coins with Barry Chappell. Abbott had a small leather pouch of coins that came in the shop and believe it or not he never looked in the pouch, he assumed it was junk I guess. Well right on this small cable tv show Abbott and Chappell offer this pouch o'coins and right there on tv Abbott decides to pull out a coin to show the audience. It was an 1815 50c. He says wait this isn't suppose to be in here. I don't remember what happened to the pouch but there was also a 1921 10c that I bought that came back MS62.

That's what I wondered, too. I'm not on any dealer mailing lists, have not signed up on any dealer websites and I've never bid in any major auctions personally.

You might or might not be amazed at whose name is on lists and how they got there. There's so much data mining going on that by now it's probably virtually untraceable. My guess is that if you've ever use a web search engine your name and your interests are out there.
You can probably get a better deal from him than working alone.
You can get the same help and an equivalent deal from many other dealers. Knowing Coinguy1, who has had an industry-wide reputation as a straight a shooter for 25+ years, were I you I would look no further. He didn't solicit you business. You have no idea what a pain working this way can be for the intermediary.
What % of hammer would any intermediary be entitled to for saving you money? How much value would your consignment have? How many items make up the package? Sell-through rates affect commision rates; who decides what are reasonable reserves if they are even part of the contract? Most importantly, how have your parameters been calculated? Past experiences of your own or others close to you. Game theory? Reading Adam Smith? Das Kapital? Sounds like a worthwhile thread.

Sounds pretty bad, I guess. Hardly seems worth it, from the way it sounds.

You kinda blew that one past me. What are you telling me? That it's a game where only a few people can produce results? My personal opinion is that the expectation of "results" over the decades is what has caused much of the anguish and the destruction of nice coins. Just my opinion here.

I'm sure he would, and I'd expect that.

I rec'd one of his emails also, to my eamail address, but it was addressed to my daughter Sara.
The only way I can think of that he got her name was from an ANA list of some type - that's the only coin organization she's a member of --
Other than that, I can't figure out how he was able to address the email to her.

Retired Authenticator for Major Mint Errors for PCGS. A 50+ Year PNG Member.A full-time numismatist since 1972, retired in 2022.
Also received an email from Mr. Abbott. I already have a dealer that I can work with for auctions and all other numismatic adventures, so a new auction representative is not something I need. I wonder how successful it will be for Mr. Abbott to send out so many unsolicited emails. I also wonder where he got his list of emails, but some of us publish ours with our registry sets. I suspect he purchased a list from someone who puts these together. Does the ANA sell their list?

<< <i>Interesting to read from others how valuable his services can be. That may be other's opinion but I don't like getting spam from a salesman or anyone else for that matter. I don't do it to anyone else and don't like it when it is done to me, I throw all of them away period. If I need help I know where to go or who to ask. This is a typical "cold call" from a salesman who is trying to make a living. The original post asked about the man (checking out his creds) and the forum is following through. I think many of us need his service and now that his past performance and background has been made known, we can follow-up his "cold call" if we are interested. Good job, Larry.
