Does Triple Crown = MVP?

Let's just say that somehow Carlos Gonzalez wins the Triple Crown. And let's also say that Joey Votto finishes just behind him in all three categories. And the Rockies finish a few games out of the playoffs, and Votto plays big down the stretch as the Reds win the NL Central. Considering the long history of inflated numbers in Colorado, would Gonzalez win the MVP under these circumstances, or would Votto get the votes due to the fact that he plays in Cincinnati for a division champ?

A triple crown does not always mean MVP award.

    See Ted Williams.

In today's world, I'd like to hope so.

The goal is to win the world series not compile stats so I should hope NOT.
  • If Gonazalez wins the Triple Crown, I would say he should win the MVP. Even if they don't make the playoffs, he's carried them this season, and there's hasn't been a Triple Crown winner in what fifty odd years?

    CarGo's home/road splits are shocking:

    Home: 25 hr, 66 rbi, .394 avg, .441 obp, .795 slg
    Road: 7 hr, 34 rbi, .288 avg, .310 obp, .450 slg

But... if he wins the Triple Crown and the Rockies don't make the playoffs, I think he'll get it just because of the novelty of the thing.

Then again, Mark McGwire didn't get the MVP award in 1998 when he was America's darling and broke the single season HR record and didn't make the playoffs. Sosa (wild card) did.

  • williams was robbed both times.
  • Well, Rockies players have had huge seasons in the past and gotten little MVP support (Remember Dante Bichette?). Ted Williams missed out twice, but there were mitigating circumstances in both cases. Gonzalez hasn't angered sportswriters as far as I know. But Votto has done so much he could possibly take it even under Triple Crown circumstances.
