CU Hockey Pool 2010-11 Edition *DRAFT Wed Oct 6 @ 9:00pm

Hello All,
It's that time again.
I have already opened up the league on Y! and have sent invites to all the past owners. We have it as a 12 team league but if there is enough interest we could change that. If you were in last years and did not get an invite please PM me your email. If you would like to be an alt please post here and PM me.
The prizing this year will be cash (as with the baseball pool I am currently commishing) and payment will need to be sent to me before the season starts. I am thinking that $25 buy in would be best with 1-3rd places receiving payouts.
Thanks and good luck to all this years team

Monday night or Friday night would be best draft times for my team.

??? not sure what you mean by that?

<< <i>did you send invites to the 4 deadbeat owners? Please retract those if you did...another year of an 8 team league does not sound appealing. Anyway, I look forward to Jimrad's new record of 350 transactions in one season. >>

I've been following hockey.... ever since I went to Vancouver in April.
So I'd be easy money, if nothing else. Trying to follow the sport more... figured fantasy would help!

<< <i>I'm guessing Vlad is a bit miffed by losing out on a playoff birth by .5 game because the GM who beat him out for the final spot was able to tally a 15-0-1 record in the final week against...yep...a dead team. Otherwise the baseball league ran pretty swimmingly so nothing I see was your fault...the deadest of the dead teams was a new owner so no one could have predicted he would bail in April. The only thing you can do about that is make a mental note of him, and clip him from the invites for next year. coughpleasedothesameforthehockeyleaguecough. >>
Ok. I acn see why he would be upset about that. Now as commish. What should i have done? I can't force people to play. Everyteam will have played the same number of times against the dead team right?
Anyway, I am open to make this work. I will of course clip any team that I know is a dead likely team in advance but all I can go on is what they have done in the past. So I will rely on everyone's help for this.
I am making the payment a requirement before the draft date so that should help.
any other ideas?

no it's an unbalanced schedule in H2H leagues for the most part. So in the case of our baseball league, it has 15 other teams (aside from yours) and 22 or 23 weeks depending on when a commish sets the week for the playoffs to begin...so in our case, that would leave 7 teams with the opportunity to face a dead team twice. Again, it's not your fault, the only thing you could possibly do is email the guy and ask him to pick it up or he won't be invited back for next season. Even then, it's not going to mean he'd suddenly become active if he doesn't want to. Regardless, it's Head to Head. The best team doesn't always win anyway...it's just beneficial to try to eliminate the imbalance when at all possible. Clipping inactive GMs is about all you can do.
edit to add: I forgot, it is possible for a commish to transfer team ownership to another person even during a season. So I guess you could always transfer ownership of a dead team to a willing party. Chances are that team would suck, but I guess if someone had the opportunity to win something in a money league without putting any money in, perhaps someone might be willing to take on what would most likely be a project.
I have added to my second post that if a team becomes inactive a warning will be given followed by the team being given away. Let's hope that we do not need to deal with that.

Yes, the out of the playoffs by .5 obviously did bug me. But I'm just used to commish's being more involved. You had one post all year and it was asking if anyone wanted to trade with you. There were a lot of teams who bailed early, at a minimum you should have sent roster setting reminders and let the rest of the league know you did. Not saying you should have started setting the rosters yourself (that should have been put to the league) for people who were obviously gone but every other league I've been in that's what's happened (that's part of the commish tools). Anyways, I'm just bitter.

<< <i>Congrats EA-Noobs. >>
Well played by all of the top finishers this year. The Noobs had it for most of the season and held on during the playoffs to win it all.
I have the email of the 1st and 3rd place teams and will be sending out the winnings this week.

Thanks. I really enjoyed my first ever fantasy hockey season, and as I'd hoped, I followed hockey MUCH more closely this season.
For future seasons, I think we should have either per position game limit or weekly transaction limit.
Churning 2/3 (or more) of your roster every day shouldn't be a viable path to fantasy success.

you won't get an argument from me on that topic. The mass add/drops did get out of hand this year, esp in the playoffs, and admittedly I joined in to try to keep up in the counting stat categories like the useless SOG. Unfortunately, unlike baseball, there aren't enough ratio stats in fantasy hockey to help combat the mass transactions so there's little deterrent to not engage in that Jimradian strategy. Most Head 2 Head leagues have a weekly limit so that's something to consider. I've been in leagues with 3, 4, 6, and 10 max moves per week. Even 14 - 2 per day would suffice. Also a consideration may be to add one more roster spot at each forward position so that there is less talent available on the waiver wire and to provide more importance on one's drafting ability and general hockey knowledge as opposed to lucking out with a 3 point night from a Kostityn brother off of the wire.
Anyway, again congrats, and only in fantasy hockey would one member of the Children of the Corn - Sedin Bros - help lead one to a championship...

Honestly, two things did the trick for me.
A. Guessing correctly on Price/Quick. Only had to sign another goalie once or twice (if that).
B. Struck gold on Selanne and Byfuglien.

Getting the #1 player at the #5 pick helped.
I think my season was made here:
10. (116) Brenden Morrow (Dal - LW)
11. (125) Dustin Byfuglien (Atl - RW,D)
12. (140) Teemu Selanne (Anh - RW)
13. (149) Alexander Edler (Van - D)
Morrow ended up #76, Byfuglien #25, Selanne #14 and Edler was a top 5(ish) defenseman before he got hurt.
Getting that kind of value late really made the difference.
As did hitting on Quick and Price. I definitely got lucky, with the vast majority of my picks panning out.
