Just landed a whale

Just won the 69 Petrocelli PSA 9 that has been in my sigline for God knows how long.

EDIT: Kinda felt like I was getting shilled, but I don't even care at this point.

If you sniped, the guy would have never have had the opprotunity to bid you up.

I must have missed the thread where you told everyone what you were going to bid on it.

I'm not so sure it was a shill, could be just the way someone bids.

5% of bids placed with that seller.

Yes it could have been better to simply bid at the end of the auction.

    Good for you.

I honestly thought I was gonna be in bed by then. I couldn't sleep so got up and checked the status which I watched the last 6 or 7 minutes of the auction.

At the level the card was won, the bidding increases in $5 increments.

In the final hour of the auction s***r (674) bid 17 times to $195.

All s***r (674)'s bids were also in $5 increments.

Each time he made a $5 bid, K's high went up $5 as is eBay's proxy bid practice.

Although when s***r (674) bid $195, K's maximum only went to $197.50 meaning K was at his ceiling becuase it did not go up by $5.

You have to ask why didn't s***r (674) place one more bid of $200 which he clearly knew would win based on seeing K's high at only $197.50?

Answer - You were 100% shilled, and had you sniped (something that could be done as early as the minute the auction starts) you win this card for under $120.

hard to argue with Nick's logic.....the other underbidder on this auction is someone who i know has been active making purchases of high grade '69s, but it looks like the alleged shiller found his ceiling the day before and the guy didn't bid again, which kind of surprised me.....i considered putting in a bid, but the late action was enough to scare me off too.....at least a cool board member got it, that's a doozy in high grade.

Perhaps the bid retractions were when he accidently had the high bid. Shameful conduct. This seller was on my list of favorites.

    I agree with Digi.

There are free snipe services so why would anybody bother bidding on high dollar items without setting a snipe!? It makes no sense to me.

Good research by nam up above also. Thanks for that info.

Nice card but too bad it comes with a little sour taste.

Got the card for what he was willing to pay...

almost seems like the shilling wasnt relevant...

I make a lot of money BUT I hate to WASTE money (not setting a snipe) and I hate it more if money is STOLEN (shill bidding) from me. To me it's quite relevant. When you go buy a new car do you just pay what they ask and don't worry if they screw you on a "rust protection" plan? Hey, what does it matter becuase you got the car you wanted!

well, to complicate things, or more likely reduce suspicions, the same underbidder just threw a bid @ a 1969 Topps #483 Ted Abernathy PSA 8 which just closed @ over 130 bucks, and was being offered by a different eBay seller....he only bid once last night and lost the item when a more aggressive bidder threw a higher bid at it 15 minutes before closing......no snipes.

    have at it.

This is great info Nick. I'm trying to learn something and I'm confused (happens a lot). If you look at the bidding history including automatic bids (see below) , you see K's automatic bids at $2.50 increments, right? Not at $5 increments? If so, how did the shiller know to stop at $195?

The bid increments are 2.50 up to $249.99.

    << <i>The bid increments are 2.50 up to $249.99. >>

I thought they were $5 increments at that stage, so I stand corrected on that point. I still feel 100% certain it was shilled.
  • The underbidder has a very low percentage of bids with that seller. He was also the high bidder not too far from the end. Looks like he legitimately wanted the card but wasn't going to overpay/pay anything to have it.
BTW - I have seen many auctions where someone will bid in this fashion (keep entering the min required bid until they reach their limit). It does get annoying when it's my own auction because it could appear to be a shill.
