First Poppage....Think I got hosed...Update with scans of offenders

Here is the Perry. I may be missing something, but a 7 seems pretty harsh for this card. I am new to this so I very well could be missing something.

And the Yaz...I figured this to be at least an 8.

Am I wrong in not understanding these grades?

Thanks for looking. Go Steelers!!!

I think that 75% of first submissions leave the submitter with that feeling. Not a disaster though...

Look on the bright side, you could have received "Evidence of Trimming" instead of "Minimum Size Requirement" and not receive vouchers for them (vouchers get mailed a few days after your cards arrive).

Do some searching in this forum for cracking slabs, it's been covered a few times.
  • Believe it or not, I bought the cards in Cooperstown of all places. They have a used book store that has some cards out front. The last place I would think to find great condition cards for a good price is the tourist trap of baseball. The McCovey alone should pay for the subs plus the cards. It's strange that I was hinging my outcome on the Carlton and didn't think the McCovey would get more than an 8, maybe 8.5 tops.

The McGinn still tourques me off a bit.

    I'll research the cracking threads.

    Thanks guys.

OMG, i think you deserve some kind of award or Honorable Mention here for deriving a plus experience from a card purchase in Cooperstown, forget all the other stuff. wow. image

My first few submissions were so much worse than that. After you submit a few hundred cards you start to figure it out! Don't give up! You need to learn to set your expectations much lower. That makes the sub feel better!
  • Lots of cards in Cooperstown but none at prices worth even considering. Except these. Go figure. It's like suffering from dehydration on a boat. All the water in the world...but not a drop to drink.

  • Hopefully you go the opposite direction I did, my first sub was the best and after that it was all downhill for me.
  • I am betting there is a small paper flake on the McGinn only visible under a 10X.

That is a pretty good first sub though. My first was modern and ended up with a couple of 6's due to wrinkles.
  • Updtaed with scans of the Perry and the Yaz cards.

Gaylord looks a little snowy, but hard to judge that from the size of the scan, could be an illegal substance smeared on his sleeves and hat image Bottom left and maybe upper right corners on Yaz seems to be the biggest reason IMO.

    Still great cards.

I think the grades are pretty close and I have to agree with jeffcbay.I can not tell for sure but the Perry may be slightly diamond cut and just meets the requirements.Still great looking cards.

  • Lower left and upper right corner of the Yaz looks to be the knocks on it. The Perry looks fuzzy and I agree maybe slightly diamond cut

Yaz's lower left corner is pretty bad, and that aint lint all over Perry's black sleeves and cap.

Yes, Perry has significant PD (the speckles on the front most noticed in the black) and the lower left corner and upper corners on the Yaz...

Still, those are really nice cards. I have cracked and resubbed with mixed results in my day. If you feel strongly about a particular card, go for it. What do you really have to lose (aside from money)? image

the snow on the perry for sure holding it back.. maybe a 9 pd

and the bottom left on yaz has a small ding..

    both correctly graded
  • Snow killed the Perry... eye appeal goes a LONG way in grading.

I have to agree with most of the other posters.

PERRY - the snow on the front really takes away from eye appeal.

YAZ - Bottom left corner did you in. (I don't think t/b centering helped either)

IF I ever bought either of these cards (and they were in "8" slabs) sight unseen, I would NOT be very happy when they arrived.

That being said, they are still nice cards for the grade.

The Perry is absolutely topped out at a 7. I've seen cards like that in 6's. The PD is fairly significant. Yaz is a good 7 with no shot at an 8. Still nice cards.

Considering it is your first submission, I think you did OK.

  • Understood on the Perry. I was mesmerized by the corners and centering and thought the snow was part of the picture, as I could not see any on the lighter background areas. I see what you all do now though. On the Yaz, that corner does not seem that bad to bring it down to a 7. Not sure about that one.

Does PSA grade different years differently? What I mean is, is a PSA8 from 1970 graded the same as an 8 from 1952? I have seen some 8's from 1952 Topps that would grade out to a 6 or 5 as a 1970. Just wondering.

Yes...vintage is graded differently than modern. They take into account the paper processes of the time and grade accordingly.
  • Ah. Gotcha. Is this a gradual process in terms of what is considered to be vintage year over year or is there a set year that marks the beginning of the modern era for grading? In my (very) limited experience thus far, it seems to me that 1957 is a bit of a turning point in terms of stricter grading, and by the latter part of the 1960's it hets stricter still. Am I wrong about this?

The knowledge on this board is truly addictive. Thanks so much guys.

According to SMR, the last year of vintage baseball cards was 1972. Maybe they will add more as the years progress. Of course, within those years, they are more lenient with the older stuff.....

The same amount of minor wear from a dinged corner will be more noticeable on a 1970 card than on a white bordered card. A little ding and wear at the tip will show a little white on a 1970 card but on white bordered cards it's already white. The bottom left corner on Yaz is obviously a little mushy and it probably looks worse in hand than in the scan.

It needs to stay that way. I was born in '73. image
