Jeter's New Contract

Is there any chance he will leave the Yankees? I have not read any speculation as to the length or the amount. What's the scuttlebutt in New York?

Jeter will not leave NY. The Yankees will happily over pay him to keep him. According to Mike Francesa, it's already been determined.
  • There is always that possibility that Jeter accumulates stats that begin to challenge all-time marks. The Yankees will want him in pinstripes for those.

    PowderedH2O,
Jeter has no chance to challenge any of the all time marks. I really like Jeter; but he is having a really down year. This is a fairly long slump he's in. I'm starting to worry about the 3700 hits I thought he'd get to. Although, it's always hard to tell because some of the athletes are in such great shape in there later years that you never know. I root for him to be great for many more years.

And yes, the Yankees will "underpay" for him. He has been a class act in a town that can be brutal. They chanted "Reggie" and they also booed him. Ask Dave Winfield. They practically threw the entire franchise (Knicks) Patrick Ewing out the door when he wasn't a superstar anymore. Rick Patino and Pat Riley could not handle it.- I know it's basketball but I was just referring to the town. Billy Martin---they loved him ...they hated him. In many ways the "Boss" couldn't handle it- he felt alot of pressure to win especially these past 10 years. //////////It's a really tough town to stay on top and through it all Jeter has been every baseball boys' dream and every hot womans' dream.

Maybe the classiest athlete in my lifetime. Every single person who knows what a baseball looks like, likes him except for probably a few on these boards.

Chipper Jones received a 3y/$42M deal from the Braves two years ago for past greatness. If the Yankees pay Jeter more than 3 y/$50 then...well...they're the Yankees.
  • So what position is he going to play? He has one of the weaker SS gloves in all of baseball. Can't play DH with a sub .275 average and no power. Are they going to pay him $15+ million to play LF? Could he even adjust to the outfield at his age?

Jeter will be in NY and overpaid and still a better deal than Pavano.

I really like Jeter and he represents the best of baseball. The Yankees will overpay him, but the question is where
will he play. I can see him play SS for two more years. After that, it might get ugly.

Age is the ultimate equalizer and no player can escape it.

Jeter may surprise everyone and bow out gracefully.

I do not see him playing more than 2 more years.

He is soon to be married and will leave the game on his own terms.

He is hitting 265 this year after about 15 or so 300+ ones.

Not many players can say that.

    Steve
    Good for you.
