New mercury dime

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
I broke down and bought this one last week.
Makes our 3rd 1916-D (G4, G6, VG10). I need to stop buying them image but I couldn't help it with this one...I really liked the obverse.

    Nice coin. Congrats.

I'm curious...why do you choose to own 3 lower grade pieces and not one higher grade example?

Interesting.... three of them? Wow... must be something about those that flips your switch. image Cheers, RickO

    Good question.
I started out thinking I had a certain budget for a key date merc. So, I got the G4. My interests are elsewhere, primarily, but I did want that key date.
Then, I saw the VG10 and liked the look and wanted it. I think VG-F15 would be the max I would spend. Liked the VG10 price better and liked the coin, so I bought it and didn't bother selling the G4.

Then, I liked the G6 that Mark had. My G4 is pretty close to it for the reverse and somewhat close on the obverse (for wear, not for toning). Had a wild hair and decided to get Mark's. Won't sell the VG10 for it but may sell the G4 at some point.

Since they are key dates, I am ok holding 1, 2, or all 3. 2 are CAC'ed and the G4 would likely get CAC, I think, as it could be a G6 imho as well. Not really sure I want anymore of the 1916-D mercs image and not thinking that I really want to put all my eggs into 1 basket (ie...a higher graded one). That higher graded one may, or may not, be worth more, percentage-wise, than all 3 we have, but I think the G4 is pretty liquid as are the others, I think.
I know we will keep at least one, and likely 2, but if we only had the 1 higher graded example, then that would be it.

It's weird, I know, but that's what it is.

Why not build a grading set of them?

If your G4 is close to the G6 in terms of detail I would think it is properly graded. IMO the new one is only a strong G4 that was bumped up due to the way above avg eye appeal which is fine going off of the total package concept. An avg grey coin with that amount of detail is a G4 to me and I like to see more of the tops of the letters & a fuller date for G6 and near full rims on a VG8. That being said I would pay G6 money for that one all day which is the true measure of a grade.

Very cool piece. I'd rather own something like that than the regular light grey worn piece.

I've yet to own a 16-D, but hope to pick one up soon as I've always wanted one since I started collecting.

Yes and yes. Can't afford it now that I have bought some of these coins (incl the Mass 1/2 cent from CRO last week as well) image

On the bright side, I like the coins I bought for our collection image

Well, like everyone else...I have one too...an opinion that is.

I would sell all three of your examples and buy 1 nicer version. Quality over quantity...that's me though...

Congrats on being happy with your coin purchase! That's what it's all about! Mercs are cool. image

I know...I just am not a conventional person. I buy what I like image
(I do know many would buy the best they could and not get quantity, however, I like the quality of the 3 I have, and have no problems with 3 of them instead of one...I've already stated why image )

D - I have you to blame for not buying it then. I controlled my urge for almost a week HOPING that someone would take the option out of my hands.....YOU didn't image

Collect what you like! You can do worse than buying several nice examples of popular key dates in low grades.

Thanks....I like nice NT coins, and while this is a lower grade, it is still a key date and nice....so, I can't lose because I enjoy it image
