  • After months of anticipation, the next great Cuban player is about to arrive. The left-hander will be recalled before the Reds' game against the Brewers in Cincinnati on Tuesday and is expected to make his big league debut this week.

<< <i>so what year card is Chapman true rookie card. 2009 or 2010? >>

When you say "true rookie card", what definition do you accept?

Some folks go with the traditional definition of "rookie card", and consider the first year a player appears in major card sets as a "true rookie cards".

MLB showed up in 2006 and tried to force their own definition of "rookie card" on the hobby, saying that the only true rookie cards are those with the official MLB rookie card logo, which usually coincides with their MLB debut.

So, by the typical hobby definition for instance, Chapman's rookie cards are in 2009 (2009 Donruss Elite, 2009 Bowman Chrome WBC, etc). By the MLB official definition, Chapman doesn't have a rookie card yet. If he makes his debut before the end of the year, I'm sure 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft will catch him. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until 2011. >>

well i'm an old folk and will go with 2009, sort of like 1985 USA McGwire RC, unless your into minor league cards.

So what is the fastest ever recorded pitch in MLB baseball?

    Gotta be Zumaya or Dalkowski
I think the record books still list Nolan Ryan though

Wasn't Dalkowski the guy that Ted Williams said was the only guy he was ever "afraid" to get in the box against? The guy threw unbelievably hard but was wild as they come....I think I read that somewhere. If Teddy Ballgame did say that, that's saying something for sure.

Hardest thrower ever ..... Minor Leaguer Steve Dalkowski

    The lore...

#1 In high school, Dalkowski threw a no-hit, no-run game with 18 strikeouts and 18 walks.
#2 At Aberdeen in the Northern League, Dalkowski threw a one-hitter... and lost 9-8.
#3 At Kingsport on August 31, 1957, he struck out 24 Bluefield hitters in a single minor league game -- and lost, 8-4! He also issued 18 walks in that game, hit four very unlucky guys, and threw six wild pitches.
#4 He pitched a total of 62 innings in 1957, fanned 121 (averaging 18 strikeouts per game) but won only once, because he walked 129 (eight more than he struck out) and threw 39 wild pitches.
#5 In 1959, Dalkowski set a Northern League record with 21 strikeouts in a game.
#6 In 1960, pitching a game for Stockton, Dalkowski struck out 19 and limited Reno to four hits but walked nine and lost 8-3.
#7 A batter in Knoxville had to return to the clubhouse and change his pants after a fastball sailed past his head. "I threw so hard I scared the whole town that night," recalled Dalkowski.
#8 One night at Kingsport, Dalkowski threw a pitch that tore off part of a batter's ear. "It made me so scared, I didn't even want to look at it," said Dalkowski.
#9 Dalkowski won a $5 bet with teammate Herman Starrette, who said Dalkowski couldn't throw a baseball through a wall. Dalkowski warmed up and then moved 15 feet away from the wooden outfield fence. His first pitch went right through the boards.
#10 In one minor league game, Dalkowski threw three pitches that penetrated the backstop and sent fans scattering.
#11 In 1960 at Class A Stockton, Dalkowski threw a pitch that broke an umpire's mask in three places, knocking him 18 feet back and sending him to a hospital for three days with a concussion.
#12 In 1965 with Kennewick, Wash., Dalkowski fanned Rick Monday -- who had just signed a then-record bonus of $104,000 -- four times. Each time Monday fanned, Dalkowski was heard to mutter, "$104,000, my ass."

I know for a fact that I have a Bowman chrome purple refractor that I pulled when busting packs looking for the Strasburg. The problem is that I cleaned my office a couple of weeks ago and have no idea where I put it. I have search for the past 20 minutes and I can't find it. This is going to drive me nuts! That sucker is going straight on eBay if and when I find it.

It looks like my buy at $138 is looking good!!!!

The same card is bidding $225 with time to go and the Auto rookies are selling super quick on EBAY.

    I like it!!
  • Can't believe there aren't any PSA graded Purple Refractors on eBay yet. I could only find one.

    PSA 9 Purp REF

That guy with the PSA 9 is a pretty darn good seller but don't think he would take that low of an offer.

Zumaya has hit 103. I think Rob Nen hit 103 as well. Can't remember if Matt Anderson ever got to 104 or not.

I got an offer for $50 on the PSA 9. Think I may wait a little longer. Greed may get me.

Oh, and Chapman hit 104 twice on the gun tonight.

    Oops.

Buster Olney just said on ESPN that Major League Baseball officially said his top speed was only 103.9, so I apologize for exaggerating.
  • hammeredhammered Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭
    That's fast
I remember reading somewhere how radar speed measurements have changed over the years. Used to be the reading was taken near home plate, once the ball had slowed a bit. Nowadays, the guns measure velocity as it leaves the pitcher's hand, which is the fastest point of the pitch. Those old-timers like Ryan and Feller's 99-102 would probably be closer to 103-105 by today's measurement.

I pulled this Bowman Chrome Purple refractor from a pack a couple weeks back. The card has a good shot at a PSA 10 in my opinion. Do you think I should get it graded or immediately list it on eBay raw?

$20-$30 card now. I am a gambler and if it is that nice in hand (surface, edges and corners) How is bottom right corner? I would submit for a 10.

Down side is small to potential 10 price.

Bottom right corner is sharp. I'm not sure why it looks like that in the scan.
  • hammeredhammered Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭
    The hype is there now
Waiting a month to get it graded could cost you
And if it gets a 9 (which is a strong possibility), it could sell less than raw

Modern, as in the lat few years, usually sells best in a BGS holder. With that said, you are wasting your time and money getting it graded by PSA. Stick it on eBAy for $75 OBO. Quite a few have sold in the $35-50 range.

I agree, plus I didn't realize how old Arlodis was, almost 23 (over the hill).

Sell the Hype and sell it (hot) now you never know when :
    1. back to the minors for more seasoning
    2. arm or back problems
    3. deported (no green card).
    4. the reds trade him to Pittsburg
    5. He admits to being a Yankee fan.
    6. He admits to knowing mark (roid) mcgwire.
    7. decides to take up boxing or football.
    8. decides he wants to renegotiate his contract.
    9. forgets how to throw a fastball.
    10. asks to be traded to the Expos.image
  • Perfect time to buy when the hype is so high!!

Has a MLB player ever been deported during their career? I can't think of one.
