The Philadelphia Set

rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
What is the current pricing for The Phildelphia Set (3 gold coins -1/2, 1/4/, 1/10 0z), a Silver Eagle and a silver Philadelphia commemorative piece? I was looking through some of my sets and this popped up... just curious. Cheers, RickO

Thank you.... it is a really nice set that I have had for a number of years. After looking it over today, I was curious whether it had appreciated in value at all. Surprised no one goes after the P mintmarked gold. Cheers, RickO

The 4 piece P.G.E. year sets have actually done way better than the milestone sets. The P.G.E. 4 piece sets are trading at nearly $1700/oz. right now.

Anyone know what the issue price of the Philadelphia Set was?
  • coindeucecoindeuce Posts: 13,496 ✭✭✭✭✭
Redbook lists issue price as $1,000. Based on what gold was at in 1993, I'd say that the premium has shrunken drastically.

8/27 edit: The value stated above is actually the 2010 Redbook valuation. The value of the set had remained unchanged in the Redbook from the 1994 edition up to and including the 2010 edition.

    Rick,

does yours also have a silver medal in it? The 1993 Philly set I have has the 3 gold eagles and silver eagle and one bullion (1 oz) piece in it.

The silver also has strong colour to it.

N/M. I see it in your initial post!
  • Were these proofs or bus. strikes? I don't see these included in any of the Registry Sets.

The US Mint produced a special Philadelphia Bicentennial Set for 1993. This set contained the precious metals coins produced at Philadelphia, namely the 1993 Proof Silver Eagle, and the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Proof Gold Eagles. A medal was also included with the set which sold 12,689 units.

Here's one I sold for 1600 in May of this year:

That is the exact set. It is quite attractive. Have had it for a long time and was just going through my various sets and was curious about the value. I have not seen it listed in the usual venues.
    Thanks for the information.

silver proof in many of these sets known to develop nice blue rim toning. Must be the green cardboard holder.

Check out my commentary on the set on Coinfacts (under the 1993-P proof Silver Eagle as I recall). And, be careful, on "put together" sets being offered out there (inlcuding several sets I have encountered where the silver coins were "fresh" and the gold coins "rejects" IMHO).

Thanks for the input Wondercoin, my set is original. Procured it many years ago. I did just review it in detail though because of your post. This set does not seem to receive much attention, but I find it to be quite attractive.

The only way to get that particular silver medal is with the set - they were not sold separately AFAIK.

Bought a set a few years back for photography purposes and recently sold at a nice markup.

The silver piece was starting to get a little bit cloudy on the rims.

As far as I know, this case cannot be opened without destroying it, unlike the other gold eagle multi-coin sets.

Case can be easily opened and closed undetected. One of my concerns when I purchased mine second hand.

The Mint package for these can be disassembled in the same manner as the similarly packaged Prestige Proof sets.

    ...........................................................................................................................................

Has PCGS labeled any of the coins from these sets with Philadelphia Set labels??

When was the set first released from the mint??

I ask because I have a sealed set with registered postmark!!

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
The closest I have come to finding the issue price is $400.... not 100% sure that is correct though. Cheers, RickO

This is one of the easiest mint products to open up, remove coins, add coins and have the set appear to be 100% fresh. No "First Strike" on proof gold or proof platinum dated before 2006 - at least that was the final decision when I submitted sealed 4 pc. sets with dates in January of the respective years for a board member a while back.
