Will a "non-FS 2010-W 1 oz. Proof Plat" ever be worth anything?

Why I would ever need to send it in for FS status...

Honestly, I can't fathom why I would need this certified, as FS or anything else.

Wait till Sept 10th to decide to open the packing box or not. By then all 2010 Plat proofs may be FS eligible.

Well, if it's an ounce of platinum, that's worth about $1500 already. If it's a proof eagle, that gives it a bit more oomph, particularly since we are seeing rediculously low mintage figures. You could be sitting on a future rarity. You just have to decide if it's more likely to be valuable if it can certify MS69 or 70 or if instead it's kept in its original package while all the others get certified. (There could be a market for mint packaged coins 20 or 30 years down the road--after all of us have ripped coins out and slabbed them.)

I'm not inclined to think that First Strike will carry much significance long-term, since it does not reference anything specific about anything the Mint is doing or any recognized variety--it simply means it was certified during the early runs of the series. The first die combination of Morgan dollar might be worth a substantial premium, but modern techniques are too refined for a distinction to be meaningful in the absence of a "reverse of (year x+1 or x-1)" or some error, like a double die, Lady Liberty sneezing, or what-not.

I am planning to keep mine sealed and see how the market goes. I have held them in the past, not only the platinum but other mint items and did quite well with the sealed boxes. The last one was the Lincoln Chronicles set.

Melt value is the fall back. Market or collector quirks are the bargains hoped for by investors. Cheers, RickO
