Anyone else find themselves buying multiples of the same coins?

DD Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭
I've become very well-acquainted with Mercury dimes and I just purchased another 1916-D because I got a "good deal" on it. I have a half-dozen of them and should probably sell some when the market picks up but I'm pretty convinced when it comes time I still won't want to get rid of any.

Yes, I am accumulating mid-grade circulated 1850 $20's. I would like to have a "roll" of 20. (It's going to be difficult to roll them in slabs. image )

Yes, I currently own over 60 1827 halves in various grades.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I have a coin that I hoard that I consider the hoard part of my core collection, but not part of my main series

Yep! I collect buffalo nickels and when I see one I like, I buy it. It doesn't matter what the date is...

Yeah, it's a problem when you see those "good deals" on coins you think you know well... image

As a result, I have around 60 or so slabbed 1909 VDBs in grades from VG10 to MS67RD image One of these days a bunch of them are going to end up on Teletrade or something like that I'm sure.

And of course I have my 35 or so 1908-S IHCs, but almost all of those make up my grading set (which is a good excuse for hoarding!!).

  • Before I opened the thread, I didn't realize you meant on purpose!

Of course, I've bought multiples of the same coin when I forgot I already had it.

But I also make a habit to buy coins in the birth years of my ancestors. Especially,
if I am looking at, for example, two type coins, I'll buy the one in a birth year. But
I also go out of my way to buy those dates. So there are a few that I have multiples
    of.

There is a big difference, though, between buying multiples of a generic date like,
perhaps, 1900, and buying multiples of 1916-D dimes. The OP has a much better
investment strategy than I do, even if he does not think of it as an investment
    strategy.

My dad uses to buy 2 of each coin, since he thought that eventually his collection had to be shared between me and my brother.
My brother is not into coin... image

I read a while ago an article. It was saying that the people who discover new trends, usually buy 3 pieces each.
One for themselves, one to sell immediately for a quick profit and the last one to be kept in its original package for a bigger profit on a later date.
    Not a bad idea. JMO

No I stay away from duplicates. I have a few, but not many.

For example I've get a complete raw set of Indian $2.50 gold pieces in a Capital Plastics holder. And I've got an MS-64 graded piece for my type set. But generally I don't keep duplicates.

Yes I am part horder and own many multiples.
I find that due to toning and strike that each piece has it own personality. I own many multiples because I see uniqueness
    in each piece.

    WOW!

Your avatar piece is the most common variety. The others are mega expensive and don't show up too often. I handled a couple of them when I was dealer.

Very true. The thrill is in the hunt. Ive printed out every recorded auction sale of these I can locate, and have an understanding of the rarity of the various types. They are few and far between for sure.

But...I thrive on that sort of stuff image

Most definitely. One-third of my Capped Bust Half Dollars are duplicates, mostly of the most popular REDBOOK varieties. I also have many duplicates of the 1921 Pilgrim Commemorative, and the Lafayette Dollar.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

  • I have two very nice Maine commems, couldn't even begin to think about which one to keep so I am just keeping both. The Oregon is one I could have multiple examples of, also the Lincoln. I go for toned so there can be a big difference in examples.

  • I generally try to avoid duplication; building sets with just one of each is expensive and time-consuming enough. I could see collecting different varieties, or having multiples if both are significantly unique, such as three Morgans of the same date, mint mark, and variety, one toned red, one blast white, and one toned blue.

I can recognize for others the fun of hoarding a pet favorite date or mint mark, even if I have no immediate plans of doing that myself.

Yes, we have over 60 liberty nickels in MS-64. When we find one we like, it gets added to the set (hoard? lol). I believe it has reached a complete double set by now, with up to four of some dates...
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

I went through that phase a year ago, but I included the 1965 SMS sets too. I still can't explain why these intrigue me.image

I have several 41-S Walkers and duplicates of a few different 1934 coins. Once you spend time and do the research to buy them the first time, it's hard to pass up a bargain when you see one later.

Because of this thread, I took some time to dig through my "VDB boxes" and made a nice discovery. Around a year a go i bought my first MS65BN Lincoln cent off the BST here (a 1909 VDB) and it was so cool looking. I knew I bought a couple more since then since I'm a big fan of 65BN Lincolns now, but I never would have guessed that I had seven of them now image They sure are pretty though image
