Do you think this 1878-s Morgan looks P/L

This coin is housed in an old green pcgs holder, the grade is an ms-66 but not P/L. I think it looks proof like and have the chance to buy at a very good price so I thought I would ask the opinion of you good folks. Thanks for looking....Joe
PS The scrathes you see or on the slab not the coin...

78-s is a tough year. They often are semi PL, but lack enough to be full PL. I have 2 pl's a dmpl and a couple one sided DMPL. Yours is a die pair that comes PL so you have a good shot. Next show we are at remind me and I will bring some comparison examples....

If the price is right, get it. It is close to PL.... only in-hand could tell for sure. Cheers, RickO

No, it doesn't appear to be PL to me.

If you have the option of having the coin in hand before buying: hold the coin vertically at eye level about half arms length away, then point your opposite hand index finger at the fields, with your finger tip approximately four inches away from the surface of the coin. Tracing your fingertip around the field surfaces, you should be able to see a sharp reflection of your fingertip in all of the field surface of both sides of the coin. Anything less is marginal for the classic criteria of PL.

  • Hard to tell from your pictures, but I would say no. Not enough mirror-like qualities in the fields.
