Let's see the best item in your collection.

I saw a similar thread on the Network 54 boards, so I thought I would start one here. Let's see the best item in your collection.

Mine is a tie between 2 items. One is a card. The other is my avatar (2006 Pujols Signed Game Used Batting Gloves).

The 2001 Topps Pujols signed card below may not seem like all that much, but since I collect signed Topps Cardinals, this is the toughest one. I only know of one other. I do know that there are not very many at all.

Well ... most of the good stuff is gone, but I guess these are close to the most valuable. I also have a signed ball (with Mantle) from the 68(?) Yankees that was obtained in person at a game 40+ years ago. My friend's grandfather was friendly with the players and he went to the dugout before the game and had the guys sign a ball for me. Something I will keep forever.

    Ron,
Am I going to be blown away? Is it a crazy Mantle card or something?

It's a tough call for me, but I would have to think it is this set up of lineup cards from the Orioles/Blue Jays game of 05/30/82. The significance of this particular game was these were the lineup cards that sat in the homeplate umpires pocket for the FIRST game of Cal Ripken Jr.'s legendary consecutive game streak:

It's not the most valuable item, but it's my favorite piece from the collection. Jim Gantner and Gorman Thomas in the dugout, with Gorman enjoying a heater...autographed by both players. Harvey Kuenn in the background sitting next to Gorman really makes this picture. Imagine the team's slugger sitting next to the manager smoking a cig nowadays!

This is away getting framed up with the Harvey Kuenn cut that was beautifully put together by Doran.

Not sure what "best" is defined as, but definitely my favorite....

Shown before, but my baseball signed at the 1955 HOF induction by five new inductees and several others. Obtained directly from the Red Sox scout who obtained it in person that day...

  • Wow, nice ball!
  • Don't know what I'd say is my best item, but these are probably contenders:

1998 NBA Finals Floor signed by Michael Jordan
    image

Baseball signed by 1965 World Champion Dodgers (Koufax, Alston, Drysdale, etc)

I can't remotely compete with all of the cool vintage stuff and the signed balls, but this is one of my favorites. Pulled it myself back in the early 90's and put it in one of those really thick screw downs. Took it out a few years ago and had it graded.

Sweet Teddy #250! PSA 8 is awesome for that card!
  • Hall of Famer Willie Wells. He passed away before the autograph craze hit for Negro Leaguers. I was lucky to get this card as part of a lot I purchased a few yrs ago. Giles is pretty tough too, his grandson Brian Giles played for the Mets.

    My Clemente RC
    image

This is the first game my dad every took me to and I still have the program from that day. (Aug 15th 1971, I was only 1) The Pirates lost 6-4 to the Cardinals. Clemente went 1-3 and Stargell hit 2 homers. I do not remember the game. Go figure!

Wow! Amazing stuff so far guys!

This isn't my most valuable but it is the most historically significant item in my collection. It's a 1933 Kansas City Blues stock certificate signed by the secretary of the team, Tris Speaker (who was also the coach for a month or two in '33). The best part is that it is made out to TJ Pendergast, who pretty much ran Kansas City around that time. I don't know a lot about the guy but everything I've read makes him seem like one of the sleeziest, most corrupt people out there. He was also largely involved in Truman's rise to the presidency.

It's a tough call. From the elusive 55 Clemente & the 56 Mantle, foul ball from Buddy Bell, complete 54B and 55T sets..

But for now, it was my experience meeting Lance Armstrong:

Not sure what the best item is - but I 'value' this item more than most.

It was the first and last WS won by the Dodgers in Brooklyn - so the WS Press Pins for the '55 Dodgers and Yankees are an all-time favorite of mine:

    image

Another is a signed ball by George Brett - PSA/DNA - game used ball from his 3000th hit game - also authenticated by the head ump.

Like many, I'll narrow it down to three. The best part is that I put these all together myself:

1956-57 World Champion Boston Celtics ball signed by all starting five (Russell, Cousy, Sharman, Heinsohn and Loscutoff) and HOF sixth man Frank Ramsey

    image

The Players Championship Flag signed by every winner (except 2008-2010 because I haven't seen them in person yet). Includes Tiger, Nicklaus, Duval, Mickelson, Norman, Trevino.

    image

1976-77 World Champion Portland Trailblazers media guide signed by the whole team

  • I think that is a great question. I bet for most of us our "best" item is not the possesion we own that is worth the most money, but what in fact means the most to us personally. I was given this

photo from my Grandfather several years ago and thought it was pretty cool to have. But now that I'm older I really appreciate it because it's a team picture that includes my Great Grandfather

(manager in the middle), Great Uncle Glenn (front row left),and Great Aunt Naomi (holding crossed bats). A team picture of the 1914 Springfield South Dakota team that scored two runs in the

bottom of the 7th to beat Ravinia. We got the picture enlarged and it's the biggest conversion piece in our house when we have visitors. The story is always better when you can say you are

actually related to some of the people in the picture. With the car ad on top it just makes a classic photo that much more interesting. No matter what card I have or will have, this is my "best"

    baseball collectible. Take Care. Doug

Unbelievable! That is great! At first, when I saw the lineup card, I was surprised. Then I read the description, and was absolutely amazed. Maybe the best lineup card to have from the past 30 years. Most major career achievements are anticipated and everything is saved, but noone would know that this game would be significant.

    Collecting: Mays-Banks-Aaron

  • Great stuff guys, I'm not sure how I forgot this one. The picture originally appeared in a 1961 Magazine, and with the help of some board members here I was able to track down exactly what magazine it was. Not only that but a board member also gave me the contact info for someone that might know a little more, I did and he actually had the original slides from this particular group of photos and was kind enough to send me a high res image that I was able to have printed at 16x20. It is a young Mickey Mantle at the Miami, OK draft office in November of 1951, what is special to me is that the guy standing two over to the left is my grandfather. By far the favorite item I own.

    image
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,143 ✭✭✭✭✭
That is one cool picture to have. I think I remember you posting that before.

Which magazine was it posted in? Still not clear which one your grandfather is - is it the guy standing next to Mick in the white shirt or the guy that is two away from Mick in the black shirt?

    Shane

  • The magazine is 1961 Complete Sports POWER Baseball Magazine, Volume 2 #1. My grandfather is the one in the black shirt.
  • Great thread! Like others, I have more valuable items than the ones I'm showing. But being an Indiana University nut, I have to show some of my IU favorites:

    image
IU football team picture from 1910 (note ball in photo). Side note on this team... this IU team did not allow a touchdown the whole year! They lost the Big Ten championship to Illinois when the Illini beat them 3-0 during the season.

This a Indiana letterman pull over letter sweater from football player HB Bill Holzbach. He lettered at IU from 1951-1954 and is in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach. He coached Gary (Indiana) Roosevelt High School to the state basketball championship in 1970 and finished 28-0. The Roosevelt team was lead by ABA and NBA player Jim Bradley.
