Are you saying that your Hogan's are going to be worth the same as Mantle, Aaron, and any other HOF baseball players? Or when you talk about hitting a small ball are you referring to golf cards?

When I first came on board here there was a thread regarding an ebay auction where
someone had graded out a 1981 Donruss set. The set IIRC had around 100 10's 3-400 9's
and the rest 8's and lower. I remember some guys wondering why anyone would grade
    such a set.

A guy named Vargha had an interesting spin on it. He said if he had done this or won the set
for the 3k that was 'invested' into it he would take the 10's and put them in his pocket.

Sell the 9's for 5.00 each on average and the rest for whatever he could get.

    400x 5.00 = 2k

assume the rest brought in 2.00 each on average = 300.00

for 700.00 he had 100 10's. Of those 100 tens (many of which were super stars) he would then be able to get
each one for less than10.00 each.

I may not have it 100% but that was the gist of it.

Griffens and Stone might remember this story, well maybe not Stone.

    Good for you.

    Very funny!!!

Someone else's car. My exact point!!! It makes me laugh beyond belief that you that you guys tried to pull yout typical gang attack but instead this time it was a real person. I don't need to prove but if I must I will. In terms of my bro, once again you internet jockies tried to talk smack. Instead I let you know that the guy in the FUNNY picture with me happens to be one of the top guitar players in the world. If getting tickets to that event from a PLAYMATE makes us a douchbag, great I want to be one.

Like I said go hunt a few rabbits and deal with it!!!

  • << <i>Thank all of you for the honest answers. My interest in the '81 Fleer set was it was the last raw set I was working on when I got out of sports cards in '91. I am 61 years old and have been "HEAVY" into coins for the last 15 years or so. I have seen a $3900 three coin set of Columbia, South Carolina commemorative halves fall to $2600 in the last 3 recession years. I will never recoup anywhere near out of my collection what I paid. I come here on the Sports Card Forum and see the passion you all seem to have for the cards and remember how it used to be. At my age I just can't see spending the kind of money coins cost anymore. I don't have anyone to leave them to so might as leave a partially finished set of '81 Fleers as anything else.

    Again, my thanks to all,

    Ron >>

If you are serious about starting the set, PM me your addy and I will send you one of the 10s I have at no cost.

My 911 Turbo is awesome and love my car

In real life it breaks your heart because you sell cards that cost $3.99.

Move on dude you are a loser it is just that simple.

Well lets see, if you teach guitar lessons to the guy who sells the most commercial records I guess you have to be good.

  • << <i>Move on dude you are a loser it is just that simple. >>

Maybe we should start a poll to see who the loser is
  • Like others have said. If the OP likes the cards and he/she can afford to pay for them we should support their interest. Just like I wouldn't even give a penny for a wrestling card because it has no value to me...

  • Let me get a word in edgewise here. My pockets are not deep, the recession and medical bills have taken care of that. I also thought it might be a fun set to put together. Getting my money back is of no concern on this set. While collecting coins I was always working on a side set of something inexpensive between major purchases. I once put together a set of SMS mint set coins for fun. SMS is "special mint set." The mint put these out 1965, 1966, and 1967. There are also some 1964 ones out there but far out of my price range. I was working on my birth year set and need 3 coins to finish the set. Even needing 3 coins the set is 10th among the 1948 mint sets on the PCGS Registry. This would be just something to keep the juices flowing. Once a collector, always a collector. We have to constantly be amassing something or the other. I figured $10 here and $15 there would not break me over a period of time. Even if I only manage to gather 100 of them in the allotted time I have left I will have accomplished something. Besides that it will be that much the relatives won't be able to get their hands on. HEEHEEHEE. (imagine that with a geezer like cackle) image

1981 Fleer set sounds like fun. Personally I rather go with Topps.

Someone might think I am foolish for working on the 1980 - 1984 Topps run of sets. I however will disagree until death. I absolutely love those years as they bring me back to my childhood and the joy of collecting baseball cards. Especially the 1982 Topps set. IMO the money value is irrelevant especially when there is sentimental value.

    Ron,

I'd say "Go for it!". There are a handful of people with a start on the '81 Fleer Basic Set Registry and the '81 Fleer Master Set Registry. Most have their emails turned on so you could write to them to see if you could stir up some mutual interest. Also, you could start a thread on the "PSA Set Registry Forum" to see if anyone there would like to begin an ongoing discussion. This is about having fun. I've enjoyed the heck out of putting together a 1962 Topps baseball set. It's turned out to cost a lot more than I ever imagined up front, but I'd do it all over again!

Best of luck to you on whatever you decide to pursue...

[edited to add:] Ooo, ooo. Check out the #1 set -- there's pics included to help you decide to pull the trigger or not! There're some inspiring "Comments" provided also. Check it out!
  • Hi Ron, I just picked up 31 packs of Fleer 81 baseball. I didn't find anything special, but the cards are in good shape. If I can help you complete your set let me know.

Wow, I don't come to these boards as much as I used to and this thread is a perfect example why I've stayed away.

1.) Someone is passionate and inquiring about a putting together a set he's interested in.

2.) An idiot comes on here and be-rates him for thinking about doing something that said idiot thinks is foolish.

3.) Multiple members defend the OP.

4.) Said idiot makes efforts to defend self and attempts to proclaim others as inferior to him.

Another sad repetitive story as to why many quality members of this board are now gone.

Doesn't what we collect become kind of like the Red Stapler is to Milton (the man pictured in bighurt2000's avatar) in Office Space. It doesn't matter the worth of the collection, only its value to ourself. If I start on this set I plan on keeping it and will have it until the day I die. The cost is of no importance. I wouldn't want to spend a fortune on the set but a few cards here and a few there over time keeps us going. The act of collecting is what we are all about.

    Ron

    Edited to add:

You can substitute cards for coins in my sig line below and it comes out the same.

Personally, I like the '81 Fleer set. The photos are clean and clear (it's the '82 set that looks like a bunch of still frames from the Zapruder film) and it has a lot of appeal, at least to some of us. There are several common cards I would like to find high end examples of and do (generally fruitless) regular searches for, so I understand, at least a little.
