You can't make this stuff up

Today I got a message from a potential buyer through eBay which read:

Potential buyer - What is the lowest you will take? thanks

Me - Thanks for your interest. For this lot I would accept an offer of $750

Moments after my response he responded with this:

Potential buyer - Will you take $675 with shipping included? thanks

True story.

The haggling stops at $750 when the question was answered, what's the lowest you will take?

Actually it was enthrallment, but thanks for playing. We have some lovely mismatched luggage for you backstage.

I agree this seems like normal haggling, maybe advanced haggling 102. I would not expect a seller to give me his lowest acceptable price just because I asked whats the lowest he will take. I don't see why you are so enthralled.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
lol. FWIW I pictured Nam stomping his feet on the floor and fists on his desk as he was reading

the counteroffer saying "I just told you the lowest I'd take you stupid Mother........"

Then when Beef started questioning his emotions I saw him throwing his monitor across the room.

    Must be the LSD.

I have a question for those that believe sellers are not answering honestly when asked 'what is the lowest you will take'

Why ask that question then? If you know it is a BS answer?

Why not simply state 'will you take X for your item?

If the seller says No, I'll take Y, you can then haggle and counter with 'how about Z then?

Once you ask 'what is the lowest' and are given an answer the negotiation is over.

I must be missing something here.

    You are missing haggling 102.
  • gumbyfangumbyfan Posts: 5,168 ✭✭✭
You should respond and tell him the best you can do is $825 now. Then tell him if he cares to haggle some more, you'll meet him halfway - at $750 plus shipping.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
The problem with haggling 102 is you might not get a reply.

    Example:

You: What is the lowest that you will take for this item?

    Me: 500.00

    You: Will you take 400.00?

    Me:

Or it could work like this"

Inquirer: What is the lowest you will take for this item:

    Seller (not me) 500.00

    Inquirer: Will you take 400.00?

Seller (again not me) What part of my answer did you not understand? You asked me a specific question and I gave you a specific
answer, you must be one of those dopes that studied haggling 102.

Can't hurt to ask as a buyer. I have bought many items throughout the years for less than a seller's "bottom line" price was. This isn't science.

Had something similar happen to me. Card was BIN or BO. I made best offer. Seller came back with counteroffer. I guess he did not know the meaning of best offer. How can I make a better offer than my best offer? I was going to tell him he was an idiot but realized as the buyer I would be the idiot . He was a crook trying to get more than my best offer. To keep the peace and not escalate his lunacy I simply accepted his counteroffer.

Agreed, this just seems like normal haggling to me. The seller's lowest price is $750, but the most the potential buyer will pay is $675. Sounds like the buyer is hoping your lot doesn't sell and you will get back to him for $675. That's just the normal way of doing business on eBay.
  • larryallen73larryallen73 Posts: 6,067 ✭✭✭
It's normal haggling in my opinion. It doesn't seem worthy of a thread in my opinion. Different people negotiate differently. My 7 year old "negotiates" by asking me 50 or 100 times until I either relent or yell at him to stop asking. Similarly, adults have different negotiating styles. As a lawyer I see negotiations a lot and everybody does it differently. I prefer a cut to the chase, let's avoid the back and forth BS, what's the bottom line... but others prefer the back and forth dance. The bottom line is you just don't know if you don't ask and in this day and age some people will accept because, in general, there are more sellers than buyers for whatever widgit you have for sale.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
I agree, everyone has a different approach in the way they negotiate.

Nick's was simply to ignore the counter offer.

He obviously does not adhere to the haggling 102 technique. (at least in this instance)

Other people may and that is their choice. The only problem I see

with it they may not get a response. Then again they might too.

As for this not being worthy of a thread I disagree.

Perhaps we should ask first if a thread is worthy, if told it is, create it.

If a consensus say's no it is not, think of something else to write about.

Maybe an old stand by like, Ebay seller schmuck135 charged me 3.00 for shipping and my item arrived

with 2.09 in postage. Or the, does PSA grade on Sundays? Better still 'How much are these vintage Ruth's worth'

    I found them in a dumpster....................lol

Maybe even a VCP request for a set of 132 cards in all grades..............please.

For this thread, 38 posts (39 now) is awesome.

I love the haggling in this hobby, it is just about my favorite part (more so at shows than on eBay), but this thread wasn't started to whine, complain, vent, exclaim, etc..... It was simply started because I thought the exchange was funny. I just thought it was funny that his own question that had a tone of finality to it, and my answer to that question, meant nothing to him. That's all. I am not frustrated, exhausted, harried, dismayed, etc.....

    Please carry on.

Well I am happy Nam found his meds and has calmed down LOL.

I am with Nam on this one you ask for bottom line/dollar. I give you a price that is it , either say yes or no, won't hurt my feelings one way or another. Everyone values different items differently. I say a PSA 7 Rose Rc is worth 800 and you say 700 and joe says 600.

Reminds me of doing card shows:
buyer: I hear the show has been real slow/bad?
dealer: yes it has been slow.
buyer : how much for all the cards in the case, I am a serious buyer and pulls out a wad of dollar bills with a hundred on the outside.
dealer: takes time figures up amount says 3,000
buyer: Oh no, i will give you 800 I know the value of cards and then throws the cash on the table.
dealer: slaps the buyer takes 20.00 from the buyer for wasting his time. or tells the buyer where to stuff his cash.
dealer: grabs cooler opens up beer and smiles.

edited to say: be careful I haven't had my meds today.
  • Its no different that when you go to buy a car and the salesman asks you what the most per month you will pay is. If you say 350 is my maximum 99.9% of the time they will counter if I could get it done at 380 a month would you take the car today?
