PCGS was tough on this one. I guessed 35 but could have believed 40.
1821's are usually very well struck, although a little lower in relief than pre-1817. And they're known for wearing poorly, particularly in the lower curls/neck and the bust area around the clasp. It looks like PCGS dinged it for flat areas on both sides as a result of wear, not strike.
Still, I'll bet you can do better if you try again (though you have a healthy attitude, and the price difference between 30 and 40 may not justify it).
For comparison purposes below is a VF30 and below that XF40. (Sorry, I don't have an XF40 in the sub-design years of 1817-25.) Lance.
<< <i>So I sent this to our host for a crossover. Guess what it came back. It was originally in a small anacs 35 holder. >>
I like her as a 35 and I also like the old ANACS slabs. Unless you are a a registry guy why on earth would you take her out of that nice old stable holder only to have her put in another holder?
I just like being able to track the coins on my registry. I signed up for the pcgs cc and decided I would try crossing a couple with a couple raw submissions. I will not waste any more money on this one going for an upgrade. I will also never buy another coin in a non pcgs holder unless I am comfortable with the coin residing in that holder.
