Someone got a good deal on this Prooflike Morgan

I was perusing ebay, and almost bought this seller's 1885-s in 63pl. It is a pretty scarce coin in pl, and those that know the series know that trying to get one into a pl holder can be brutal. I then looked at his completed auctions, and found this. Man, I wish I would have seen that one, but it was listed around midnight here on the east coast. You just don't find that many 1900 dollars in pl, and never at that price.

1900 PCGS MS63PL

Oh, and I did already ask the seller, what is for sale now is all he plans on selling at this time. Oh well, maybe next time!!image

It was up for only ten minutes before it was bought. I'm surprised it lasted that long, even late at night.

  • The coin likely wouldn't go PL today. Rattler standards were MUCH looser on mirrors.

This is very true but on dates like this many would still be happy to have it.

I agree. In fact, this is an example of my Rattler Morgan that was designated as PL. I recently resubmitted the coin, and although it came back with a higher grade, there was no PL designation.
I'm still scratching my head on this one, as I really thought it would easily be PL again.

Most of the later date pl (and dmpl) morgans have little contrast, so pics are even less helpful for these dates. As a whole, I agree that standards now for pl and dmpl are as strict as they have ever been, and many older holders would not make the pl or dmpl cut today. Still, I would have bought that coin in an instant at that price.
