Coin Club report 8/19 El Segundo, CA

There were about 30 people in attendance, including six boy scouts and two scout leaders. I arrived a bit late so missed the pledge of allegiance, the treasurer's report and some of the show and tell. I did see some coins in "third-world" slabs that someone bought for maybe a buck a piece, with the warning about some of the lower tier companies. One of the scouts showed off his completed 50 state quarter folder, and another his Boy Scout commem $1 coin. There was a Belgian steel coin that was struck from the same planchets as the U. S. 1943 steel cents.

Noted numismatist Phil Iverson did the collector spotlight segment, talking about the year in coins during 1960. It was the year, Coin World magazine started, and the front page from the original issue of 16 pages was shown.

Refreshments included chips, muffins, scones, and Boston Cream Pie.

A couple of raffle highlights: a Civil War era fractional note, and a club anniversary medal. The scouts won four or five of the 15 or so raffle prizes.

Auction highlights include: a seated half started at $1, hammered for $12, an AU Liberty nickel, an AU Large Cent.

The club is planning to change to an earlier meeting time, which unfortunately may mean some current members can not make the start of the meeting.

The curious can find next meeting under its old name Culver City Coin Club, or the new name Bay Cities Coin Club. If El Segundo is not a convenient location, there are also active nearby clubs in Long Beach and Woodland Hills.

Sounds cool. Phil gave that first year of Coin World presentation to the Woodland Hills club a couple of months ago and I found it pretty cool. I thought you guys met on the 2nd Thursday of the month which is the date the Woodland Hills club meets. Had I known your meeting was a week later this month I would have tried to make it. Will keep an eye on the club website though and maybe I'll be able to make it one of these times. Thanks for posting.
