If you could turn back time... If you could find a way?

Sorry to post the lyrics of a Cher song, but it was on the radio and got me image

If you could go back to when you first became a serious collector would you collect something completely different -or- would you stay on the same path image

I certainly would have held on to a few special coins that I've sold over the years. It always seemed like a good thing to do at the time, but 'seller's remorse' always finds a way to crawl its' way back.

Seriously I'm still sometimes kick myself for not buying that superb toned major PQ MS64 1923 Monroe you dumped on EBay! image

I guess that part of how I collect now is a function of the (painful) lessons I learned earlier on in collecting, so it's somewhat unfair to say, "If I could go back". Having said that, if I knew then what I knew now, I would still have toned business strike Franklins as my passion, just that I would have waited at certain points to buy specific coins and been more involved at other times. Also, I'd probably have bought more DBHE material in the mid to latter 1990's... and maybe some more gold in the early 2000's.

I would have takin the same path but i would of never sold off my franklin proof collection i almost finished image I also would have never sold a raw proof set of franklins i assembled in a library of coins album. I had them in that album for many years and when i sold it almost all of them had amazing toning on them.

Nothing would have changed re coin collecting.

The one thing I would like to do is change the last two seconds of a track race I ran decades ago. I made up 25 yards on a guy in the last lap, he was running on the chalk between lanes 1 and 2, there wasn't enough room to safely pass on the inside, so I went outside and we tied for third place. I'd like to have that back and try to pass on the inside and see if I either could get a clean third place or would get DQ'd.

I'm happy with the current path... maybe jump into seated dollars in MS right away instead of slowly, but overall i'm happy. image
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

For the most part i would stay on the same path...Probably would have done a few things different but such is the learning curve... One thing for certain that i have learned is to buy the coolest coins with spectacular eye appeal that i can afford... Makes me and everyone of mine who sees them "happy"... image

I believe I wouldn't have changed a thing, besides I wish I had the knowledge and eye I have now when I first started... I would have a lot more nice toners.

  • I would have taken the advice of the older collectors and dealers. Buy the key coins first, in the best condition you can afford. The commons , as a rule, remain the same, the keys go up in value. For example, The '09-S VDB in XF (this was 1976) I could have bought for $165. The roll of 70-S small date Lincolns I turned down for $50. St. Gaudens, all day long for $75 a pop uncirculated. Uncirculated Morgans for $3 and up. The only CC coin I own is a Morgan that came from the melt (junk) box for $3.50. One last example, look at what the Lafayette Dollar has done in the last 5 years. Five years ago they could be had in MS-65 for less than $5000. I could go on and on but it hurts me to think about it now.

Ive been kinda smart on buying many coins. Gold at $280 oz, was a stand out on the good end. On the bad end stuff i should not have ever bought my 25c PF 69Dcams that luckily I broke even or made a dollar on. my Large cents i should have kept.

I would like to go back to 1995 and redo everything after that. Mainly back to when my dad was still here.

I would have started collecting sooner, as well. I didn't start until 2008. I don't count the state quarters.
