Hey Chicago guys, need opinions! - updated

My wife and I are heading to Chicago to attend my son's graduation from Navy boot camp. Got any thoughts on fun things to do there? We'll have just the weekend.

He wants to eat - deep dish pizza, and at The Shanty and at Wildberry pancake restaurant. Anyone been to either place?

Thanks!

Mark

UPDATE

OK, Chicago is a sneaky city. They label I-94 as east/west even though it runs directly north/south. I know that was to get out of towners like me to go the wrong direction and pay a couple extra tolls when they get off and turn around! And I didn't know til I read the signs that Wisconsin is actually west of Illinois.

Also found it interesting that the speed limit is 55 on many highways but if you drive 65-70 you will be passed by 90 percent of the drivers on the road.

BTW had an awesome deep dish pizza at Malnoti's.

I'd say you ought to see about getting Cubs tickets. They're playing the Braves at Wrigley Field both Saturday and Sunday.

Also, from a retired Air Force guy, wish your son good luck image

  • The Field House. (Although some displays, especially the meteorites, are a little out of date.)

Edit to add: Still well worth the visit.

fwiw, deep dish pizza is for the tourists, it's not really as big of a deal as people outside of the area think. btw Malnati's > Giordano's.

    Navy Pier
    Architecture Tours
    Other tours
Second City 50 Years of Funny
    Steppenwolf Theatre
Chicago's Museum Campus The Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Soldier Field -- are all tied together.
    Art Institute of Chicago
    Chicago History Museum
    Polish-American Museum
    Live Music this weekend
Ravinia Festival in Highland Park (north shore)
    Six Flags Great America
    Ameristar Casino
Horseshoe Casino across the border in NW IN
    Rush Street

or just find Lake Shore Drive and you'll find stuff to do. Beaches, bike rentals, women etc.

edit to add: THE CUP could also could be on tour in the area

  • There is a giordanos in Gurnee, on Grand Avenue, just a few miles west of the mall. Lou Malnati's has a location in Buffalo Grove, take 137 to I94, exit Lake Cook west; it will be a few miles down. My wife went to Wildberry last week or so and enjoyed.

As for the Shanty I haven't been their in over a decade,( way before it got famous) though I regularly drive past it. Since being featured on that show, business has boomed, making them expand the place and parking.

Well since you will be in Great Lakes probably the best place to go will be Lou Malnotti's on Lake Cook road in Buffalo Grove. (As someone else mentioned). Not alot of good places to go up by Great Lakes so you will have to head south towards the city to see the sights. A better place to go for pancakes is Walker Brothers. There is one in Lincolnshire and other locations. Its kinda pricy but you get alot for your money and its very good.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I agree. My favorite for deep dish is Lou Malnoti's and for thin crust is a tie between Ledo's in LaGrange and Vito & Nick's in Chicago.

Also, if you're looking for something to do at night, I recommend Blues Chicago or Kingstone Mines for live Blues music...both are great night spots.

I would drive down Sheridan rd to lake shore drive to the city. Pass through the wealthy lakeside North Shore suburbs, manicured parks and beaches.
Try eating at downtowns Gino's East on Wells St .

Vito and Nick's aint tied with ANYONE for the best thin crust in Chicago. In fact, its amazing that they dont deliver....they could probably make 3 times as much if they did!

The place is at about 85th and Pulaski by the way...and if you want thin crust, its worth the long drive.

BBCE is also worth the drive, but call ahead to make sure someone will be there. Its basically just a small warehouse with so much unopened material your head will spin.

Finally, I would recommend a trip to Navy Pier and then a quick hop over to Shaw's crabhouse on Hubbard street for dinner. If you like seafood, its THE place to eat! Figure on about $60/ person with appetizers, entree and tip though...its not cheap.

It is marked east–west in IL in accordance with its general alignment across the country. I-94 begins in E-MI and runs to MT so outside of the L jog around Lake Michigan through Chicago and up to Milwaukee, it runs west the entire duration. Hence I-94 runs "East/West".

And to take it one step further, all U.S. interstates that run north/south are odd numbers.....east/west are even numbered.
