Please help me understand why bars instead of coins?

Back in the 1980's, I actually owned (3) 100 ozer Sunshine Mining silver bars. They are the only pm bars that I've ever owned.

Nothing bad ever happened because of those bars. They were heavy, but nothing terrible. I suppose that I could have used them as doorstops, if need be.

But since then............nothing. It's not a mental block or a phobia. It's not an accident. I just seem to like coins better.

  • I've never figured that one out, either.

Nothing beats a US Mint bullion coin or a US Mint 90% coin, IMHO.

I look at a bar and all I think is "This s not all as it seems"
  • I like 'em Both image but

I can still _dream of having a walk-in Vault/Panic Room lined with 100 oz bars of Silver...
  • The Sunshine Silver 10oz+ bars give you a nice coin look to it.

    Sunshine

The Perth Mint gold bars are very nice up close. Lots of luster to the gold.

I like them both as part of a well diversified stack. Bars are good when it comes to premium and space considerations.

I always thought these were also good when it comes to premium and space considerations:

Prior to this week, I have only owned coins due to my buying small lots at a time. I find 1oz bars irritating, but I just got my first 5oz bar this week and I like it.

I go for maximum diversity to appeal to the largest possible market should I need to sell, so I buy both bars and coins.

When you start thinking in terms of thousands of ounces and even tens of thousands of ounces, coins become tedious.

I'm not there yet, but I'm at the point where I can understand it.

That's why they invented coin tubes, and Green Monster Boxes!

I like government produced coins (bullion) and privately minted bars. I do not like privately minted rounds.

10 oz silver bars and rolls of ASE/Maples are my favorite.

  • I like them both... but Im seriously considering switching to gold coins instead of bars.

I compared my 1oz gold Engelhard bar to a Buffalo Gold Coin and felt like I had crap in my hand compared to that. I was amazed at the size difference even with the same weight in gold.

I started out with a couple bars, sold them and got some ASE's. I then only got ASE's. maples, or some prospectors. However, I recently got a JM 5oz and a 5oz onza bar that I feel in love with. That's just my bullion though. I prefer having a lot of 90%.

Hey, whatever floats your boat, but I just don't see any aesthetic quality in a bar of metal.

Serial numbers. You either love 'em or hate 'em. If you keep track of them, you're more likely to get back what gets stolen. If the government tracks them (some people somehow think so), something evil will happen to you if you buy them (although I haven't heard what).

Good point when it comes to strictly PM bars .... but Art Bars, well, you are in a different ballgame. Like collecting vintage old coins. Some of those bars have superb designs, and utilized only the top engravers available at the time. That's why I like them ... To bad that era has passed us by. image
