2010 Satin Finish Mint Sets - Quality? Errors or Varieties?

DatentypeDatentype Posts: 1,677 ✭✭✭
I have not seen any comments concerning the 2010 mint sets released a couple of weeks ago. Has anybody discovered errors or varieties etc? Also, what do you think of the quality?

My take is that if PCGS grades like they did last year there will not be a lot of sp 69 grades. For the Presidentials, more abe-d in 69, much less of the others if any? Kennedy's, yikes, maybe a small amount of 69's like lastyear. Native American, D's not likely in 69 and a couple P's like last year at best. National park quarters in 69? Mybe some Grand Canyon D and Ht Springs D. P mint maybe a very amount of G cany and Hot Sp as well but they were really, really bad quality. Lincoln's, worst year ever for 69 quality. Jeff's not good either. Roosey's more D's than P's similar to last year amounts. Anyway just curious if others found the same?

Sorry for the bad scan. I was too lazy to set up the camera. I thought it was a strike thru as well till I got a glass on it.
It's raised all the way so I started thinking crack. Looks just like the other die crack coins I have.
Can a strike thru be raised? I guess it could if it retained it but that's not what I'm seeing in hand.
You guys could be right, I don't know. I should have waited till I had a real image.

That Roosevelt looks like an incomplete punch from the blanking machine creating a nice planchet flaw.

    Almost forgot.

The only errors I can see are with sets 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 in that I should not have ordered them!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

The photo does not show it very well but there is a neat indentation across the top of the coin over the KLI in Franklin

The Philly coins are nothing but trainwrecks. The Denver Lincolns are spotty but some nice ones were found. Nickels sucked, dimes were nice, Quarters were as you mentioned. The Halves sucked and the Prexie bucks were spotted mostly bad but a few decent ones were found. Of the first 50 sets I submitted 6 coins to NGC. I am done submitting moderns to PCGS after the Business strike Shield cent blood bath which everyone took. I have been through 100+ sets and have been very disappointed to say the least. The US Mint doesn't care about quality of these sets........period.

Manorcourtman, I feel your pain! It's gonna be real tough supplying top end coins in the PCGS marketplace. At least NGC gives out something that stands out from the rest. i went through 600 sets and I really don't know how many people can take the beating it takes to cut up the sets to sell. After ebay fees, paypal and shipping costs - not to mention the time involved it's a loser. They don't recoup by selling rolls since they sell for near twice face at mint. Next problem is PCGS sp 68's barely making slab costs. The only hope in making any money are 69's. Same old story as last year except the rolls are not in demand. I used to sell Lincoln rolls from mint sets for $50 a pop and Roose dimes and Jeffs fro $100+

Top pop NGC moderns have been very good to me this year. Not PCGS top pop money but inching north. I believe their market share is gaining and gaining. I don't do Proof issues but Business strike and SMS coins have pulled strong money imho. The Shield cent debacle by PCGS will not be soon forgotten by several dealers. I am just a small guy but I know when enough is enough and grading standards have changed. All the top pop's I made in NGC plastic are superb coins and very deserving of the grade. I am not in the Business to waste time and money and searching for ultra GEM business strikes is VERY time consuming and expensive. It's really too bad PCGS has set unrealistic standards for ultra moderns, especially business strikes. I've moved on as have some others I have spoke to. PCGS still gets my classics but Moderns......never again. I better shut up before I get banned........ My couple of thousand dollars a year in modern grading fees probably won't be missed anyway. It's a real shame as I submitted only to PCGS for nearly ten years.

Manorcourtman, what happened with the shields? just no 67's? I tend to agree with most of PCGS grading if you really give the coins some time you can see what they are downgrading the coins for - problem really is do they remain consistent?

It's really about what keeps it from that grade that you are looking for rather than what makes it that grade if that makes any sense? NGC is easier with many of the modern coins and there is a reason they sell for much less in many instances. I have been dissilusioned many, many times from both companies.
