Did you get the email? Looks like PCGS is offering a prize and a deadline for top registry sets. I don't know what they look like but who wouldn't want one? This is just the thing to get people buying PCGS coins and registering them at a fast pace again...

Dear PCGS Set Registrants,
This summer we will recognize those collectors who have registered
outstanding sets in the PCGS Set Registry.
Engraved plaques will be awarded in the following categories:
· The FIVE best CLASSIC sets: 1794-1964
· The FIVE best MODERN sets: 1950 to date (including Jefferson
nickels and Roosevelt dimes)
· The FIVE best NEW sets in 2002 (Sets registered between
July 1, 2001 and June 30, 2002)
Also, we will be inducting 20 all-time great sets into the PCGS Set
Registry Coin Collecting Hall of Fame. There will be two categories:
the ten greatest complete sets of U.S. coins of all-time and the ten
best-specialized collections.
Hall of Fame collections and the five best Classic, Modern, and New
sets will be selected based on a vote of PCGS coin experts.
Finally, "Best of the Registry" certificates will be awarded to the
number one current set in each category.
All winners will receive recognition on the PCGS website for their
fine efforts and each winning set will be recognized with a
"Best of the Registry" icon. If you are a winner and wish to remain
anonymous, we will announce only your set name.
The deadline for set registration and updates is June 30, 2002.
Please plan ahead when sending potential set registry coins to PCGS
for grading, as all sets will be judged on July 1, 2002.
PCGS wants to reward those who participate and acknowledge the hard
work it takes to assemble these great collections. Please share your
feedback with us and watch for updates and more information on the
awards program at www.pcgs.com/new_set_registry. As the contest
progresses, we will be providing status reports of the top sets
currently leading in each category.
Have fun and good luck!

It is now just an excuse to raise prices until June... and for people like me who are only looking for 2 coins, I guess i will have to wait until after June to finish my set....

Michelle: Do you actually believe classic as well as modern collectors are so stupid as to pay ransom prices for the next 90 days IN ORDER TO WIN A PLAQUE!! A trip around the world - maybe. A "plaque" - come on. Have a bit more confidence in your fellow collectors! Wondercoin.
Just read the small debate that was going on about "no hidden sets in top 5".... if that sort of thing is an issue, then i am sure there are folks who want the plaque.
michelle
I light of current information we need to increase the price on all registry coins by 30%. This should be effective immediately. Move ahead with a plan to advertise all registry coins in the next marketing release with a 10% discount on select items. Be sure to include that we guarantee all items will be delivered in time for inclusion in the PCGS awards.

If you really want a plaque, just buy an entire #1 set, probably available at only a 20% premium!!!
In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!
<< <i> The FIVE best CLASSIC sets: 1794-1964 >>
Is this the complete type set, or the copper/nickel/silver, both, or a total of 5 from the two?
<< <i> The FIVE best MODERN sets: 1950 to date >>
Is this proof, CS, combined, all three, or a total of 5 from the three?
<< <i> The FIVE best NEW sets in 2002 >>
Is this type sets or any sets? How will one set be compared to another? I don't remember the exact date I registered my sets... is there a way to find out short of e-mailing and asking?
The way I read it, the Top 5 classic sets might be a suberb Morgan set, a 3 cent nickel set, a 2 cent set, and a Bust Half set. Don't think that they are referring to just Type sets here.

(David) HELL NO! The Type Set guys are troublemakers!
In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!
Don't you know that PCGS sent me and Cosmic a "special" info packet this week? Something about how to get your NGC forum login. Not sure if they were wanting us to leave or if they just wanted us to stir up some more trouble.
Since Morgans are next on the schedule, I don't think that it will be long before PCGS forgets about Type collectors completely. I haven't seen many cry louder than a Morgan-lover snubbed.
