Agree. The 38 Special in the +P loadings with semi-jacketed hollow points can be a serious self defense weapon although the recoil and muzzle blast will be formidable in a small lightweight revolver such as this.

It's a S&W Model 642-2 with 2.5" barrel chambered in .38 Special +P. The barrel being longer than the standard 1 7/8" barrel on most J Frame's allows the gun to be surprisingly accurate. The longer barrel helps a bit in ballistics but the real gain is the longer sight radius. It's an Airweight aluminum frame gun so you hardly even notice it's in your pocket. Again surprisingly, the recoil is very manageable even with +P's. It's not uncomfortable or painfull at all to fire.

Nice gun...silly question here: Can you use .380 ammo in a .38 revolver or no?

Jus a nickname I came up with. I can fire one almost as fast. The 5 shot chamber requires more accurate aim!image

Mine has a 1" barrel not much good after 20 feet. The 38 special will fire 357 rounds.

What does the +P stand for?

  • Nice piece. First and only one ?....or just another one added to the collection ?
If first, why did you decide to get one ?

Gecko, unfortunately no. You can't fire .380's out of it.

GSA, the +P is a designation ammunition manufacturers came up with a while back that signifies the round has more power than the standard round of that caliber. Basically, they're super hot rounds. Also, you can't fire .357 Magnum rounds in a .38 Special. It's the other way around. The bullet and case are the same diameter in both .357 Magnum and .38 Special. The difference being the .357 Magnum case is longer. So you can fire .38 Special in a revolver in .357 Magnum but the .357 Magnum round won't insert fully and can't be fired out of a .38 Special gun.

Edmund, just another one in the herd. image

Fiocchi 148grain semi jacket hollow points are what I load mine with. The +P hotter than that?

    Got 38sp in 357 backwardsimageimage

Fiocchi 148gr SJHP .38 Special is rated at 820fps muzzle velocity and 225ftlbs muzzle energy.
Federal 129gr HS JHP .38 Special +P is rated at 950fps muzzle velocity and 258ftlbs muzzle energy.

The Fiocchi ammo is good stuff. I use it for my range ammo in many of my guns. For PD purposes though I load up the Hydra-Shok +P's.

    nice pocket metal.

My next puchase is a model 637 Airweight with an IWB holster. My Springfield XD45 4" Service model gets a little heavy when wearing shorts in the summer, even with my Crossbreed Supertuck. Also, I can use the 637 as an ankle backup in winter.
