ARGH! I hate when this happens

Hit my usual spots this weekend. Had a chance to get a roll of 1/10oz gold maples for $1 over. Passed because gold seems a little high right now. But after further consideration thought I should go back and get them ($1 over for fractionals!). Of course they were all sold. What a dummy I am!

  • That has happened to me before in the past when it came to silver art bars. For example, I was at a Spring coin show in Tennessee and I had a chance to buy a 1-oz 1973 Belford Mint "Peacemaker" silver art bar. I saw it on the 1st day of the coin show but I passed on it initially because it was selling for about spot + $4.50 which I thought was high at the time so a looked around at the coin show and bought silver art bars for a much lower premium over spot that day. I did end up buying a silver art bar from this dealer table for $18 because I wanted it but I was still thinking about that Peacemaker art bar and I went home after the 1st day of that particular show in Tennessee.

I checked to see how much money I had left after buying several silver art bars on the first day and I saw that I had more than enough money to go back and buy that 1-oz 1973 Belford Mint "PeaceMaker" silver bar for $18 and some other silver bars. I decided that I will go back on the 2nd day of that coin show to buy the PeaceMaker bar for $18.00 because I had an interest in buying it and I like the way it looked. So I went back on the 2nd day of the show to go to the dealer table where I saw it and the dealer told me that someone came and bought all of his silver art bars for $18 each. I was disappointed but it was no big deal to me. I figured that I will have another shot at it in the future to buy it at another coin show or at my local coin dealer.

This next silver art bar miss is not exactly similar to the OP's but there was another time at a local coin show that I went to on October 31, 2008. where I saw a 1973 USSC "Save the Grizzlies" silver art bar that I was looking for but I was a a minute too late because there was a guy that was in the process of buying it. I got to the coin show late at that time. The guy paid $13.50 for it. I was very disappointed at that time and since then I was not able to find another bar like that but I will not give up. I hated that when that happened but that it just the way it is sometimes.

The most recent time where I had missed opportunities was in late March 2010 when my local coin dealer had a lot of Coca-Cola silver art bars for sale for $25.00 each. That is an excellent price for a Coca-Cola silver art bar and that is one of the lowest prices that I have seen Coca-Cola silver art bars selling for locally. $25 is a good price because Coca-Cola art bars usually sell for between $30-$100 on ebay. Some Coca-Cola art bars sell for a lot more than $100 on ebay. This local dealer had about 30 or so different Coca-Cola silver art bars and I started to buy as many Coca-Cola silver art bars that I could afford. I ended up initially buying about 10 different Coca-Cola silver art bars during that time in late March 2010. I would have bought more but I ran out of spending cash at the time and I decided that I would come back later because this dealer still had plenty of different Coca-Cola bars in stock. When I got my next paycheck 2 weeks later, I decided to go back to this local coin dealer to pick up more Coca-Cola silver art bars. When I got there he was almost cleaned out of his Coke art bars but he had a very few left and I picked up a couple more and I went back one more time a couple of days later and found one more Coke bar that I was interested in buying.

I will admit that initially I had "mixed" emotions about late March 2010-early April 2010. On one hand I was disappointed to miss opportunities to buy more Coke art bars for $25/each but on the other hand, I was extremely happy to be able to buy several Coke silver art bars for $25 each. I also was able to buy some duplicate Coke bars during that time as well because I like Coca-Cola bars that much.

Now when I look back at this particular time earlier this year and I look at my Coca-Cola art bar collection, I truly feel that this particular time was the best time for me as a silver art bar collector because despite missing out on buying some more Coca-Cola art bars from this local dealer for $25/each, I was still able to buy a lot of hard-to-find Coke silver art bars for $25 each. Every once in a while I will back back to this dealer to see if he had any more Coke bars and if he was still selling them for $25 each.

Late March -Early April 2010 was my best opportunity and I took advantage of it as much as I could but I also missed some opportunities to buy more Coke art bars during that period because I ran out of spending cash. As I mentioned earlier, this period was my best time ever as a silver art bar collector despite those missed opportunities because I was able to buy a lot of Coca-Cola art bars that were on my "wish list" for a decent price. It also gave me more optimism to be on the lookout for more Coca-Cola silver art bars at my local dealers and at coin shows.

I hate to think about how many better art bars I tossed aside before I knew any better. I knwo for a fact that the first time I had a Frederick MD bar I sold it for only $75. Now like you I collect them. Fun and interesting way to stack silver.

Yeah it is very fun to collect silver art bars especially silver art bars that were minted in the 1970's. Unfortunately, the Frederick MD Coke silver bar is not in my Coca-Cola silver art bar collection but it is on my silver art bar "wish list". I do not expect to find a Frederick MD Coke silver bar locally for a decent premium and I do not plan to pay $500+ for it on ebay. I might get lucky to find one locally for a decent premium but the chances of that is very slim but I will not give up.

I guess I am a "cheap" silver art bar collector. image

I am a cheap silver art bar collector as well. I rarely pay a premium over standard 999 price. And unless I really like the design I will sell the high premium ones 2 x spot or better. Then take the money and purchase two others.

I try to pay the lowest premium over spot possible and that is why I buy most of my silver art bars locally at coin dealers and at coin shows because they treat silver art bars as .999 generic silver bullion and price it accordingly. I usually pay about $1.00-$1.50 over spot for silver art bars that I buy from my local dealer. At coin shows, I will pay between $0.75 to $2.00 over spot for silver art bars. Sometimes I might pay spot or slightly below spot for some art bars but that is very rare for me and that does not happen very much.

For Coca-Cola silver art bars, I try to pay the lowest premium possible but that is sometimes hard to do but I am not willing to pay $35.00-$100.00 (or more) for a Coca-Cola silver art bar on ebay. The most that I will ever pay for a Coca-Cola silver art bar is $31.00. That is my price limit for a Coke art bar and I will usually look locally at my local coin dealers and at coin shows to see if I can find a Coke bar for well under $30. For any other silver art bars on ebay that is not a Coke art bar, I will set my max. bid at $4 over spot and that includes shipping costs and I will only bid on the weekends (anytime from Friday night to Sunday afternoon before 6PM) when the gold and silver markets are closed. I do not buy many silver art bars on ebay because I get outbid on a regular basis on silver art bar auctions on ebay. It is not very often that I can win a silver art bar auction on ebay but when I do win a silver art bar (Non-Coke) on ebay I usually pay on average between $2.00 to $3.50 for it on ebay. If it is a Coke art bar that I win on ebay, it is for $31.00 or less.

I have never sold anything on ebay and I do not plan on selling anything on ebay but I see what you are talking about because I see some of those same art bars that I bought for $1.50 over spot end up selling for $6-$7 (or much more) over spot on ebay.

I have bought a few silver art bars on ebay and the last silver art bar that I bought on ebay was a 1977 Coca-Cola-Birmingham for a total price of $29.99. It was an ok price for this bar on a relative basis but not great but I wanted it. Normally I would not even touch a silver art bar on ebay (or anywhere else) for $29.99 but it was a Coca-Cola bar that I was looking for and it was a relatively fair price on this Coke art bar IMO. I usually get outbid on ebay on Coke art bar auctions. I had a chance to buy the Coca-Cola-Birmingham silver art bar at my local dealer for $25.00 but I ran out of spending money at that time because I bought a bunch of other Coca-Cola silver art bars from this local dealer. When I came back to to buy the Coca-Cola-Birmingham bar at a later date, it was gone. That was one of those missed opportunities that I was talking about in my previous post but at least I managed to win an ebay auction for this Coke-Birmingham for a relatively "fair" price of $29.99.

Sometimes what I will do if that if I cannot find any silver art bars that I want locally, then I will look to see what is available in my price range on ebay. I end up just lurking on ebay because I usually cannot find any silver art bars that I want for a decent premium or if I am able to find one and bid on it, I usually get outbid on it.

Either you were in the market to buy gold, or you weren't.
If you were, and you passed up +$1, you need to hit yourself upside the head with a 2 by 4 once or twice.

    2 x 4 would of been helpful

I did pick some other stuff up at spot however. And I just picked these buffalos up which I had put back last week at $25 over spot (now under spot). But I still should of went for it.

  • That 1oz gold JM bar looks huge! Bigger than the 50g Credit Suisse silver! image

What is the thickness on your JM gold bar?
  • tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
It is the same size as regular 1 silver bars. The 50 gram silver ones are just thicker but other dimensions are the same. I like the small A_mark bars but the first time I purchased one I put it on a scale because I would swear it was to small to be an oz
