Strawberry...

I took my daughter to the airport early this morning to catch a flight. As we were walking to the gate, I realized that we had just walked past Darryl Strawberry. I went over to where he was sitting and spoke to him for a few minutes, then he was gracious enough to pose for a picture with my daughter. Not sure if I knew what to expect, but I was amazed at what a nice freakin' guy he was. My daughter has no idea who he is, but what a cool morning!!

Pretty neat. I'm fairly observant and have rarely come upon pro-athletes in public.

  • Very nice to hear he's a good guy. Despite all the off-the-field problems, he was one hell of a talent.

    Shane...

You are correct. He lives in St. Louis, but is still working for the Mets.
  • That is a cool story. He was my favorite player growing up even though I am a die-hard Cardinal fan. He actually lives in Cottleville, MO.

That's a cool story! Whenever I see someone famous in public, I just freeze up and stare from the corner of my eye. I'm a wuss...

That's a neat story. It's always refreshing to hear that some players or former players are down to earth and real nice when it comes to a fan wanting a photo or an auto.

    Nice photo too...image

    Jeff,

Freezing up when seeing someone famous in public is a normal reaction--don't sweat it. Living where I live (Los Angeles area), I do see famous people every now and then, but I do not approach them if I see too many people around them. If they are alone and I have liked them, I would chat them up, but its a bit of a nervous situation to be sure, so I know where you are coming from.

I'm a big Darryl fan as I always liked how he played the game and he seems like many people enjoy his company.

And this is coming from a Phillies fan who usually can't find a nice thing to say about a Met.image

I was in line for a hotdog and a pop at the IRL auto racing event in Joliet about 6-7 years ago. I noticed the guy in front of me was like 7 feet tall. When I finally got a good look at his face, I turned to my then girlfriend and said "look, thats Bill Wennington". Bill immediately turned to me and said..."Bill Wennington?...Where? Really?". Then he smiled and said hi to us. It was both funny and very cool.

Great thread and even nicer on this father's day morning. That was very kind of Strawberry to take a pic with your daughter. That pic is a keeper.

indeed, L.A. offers many opportunities to rub elbows with fame, the best and......um, not so best.

walked into a waiting area at LAX with my wife for a flight to Hawaii, and there's Abdul-Jabbar sitting with his female companion directly across from where we plopped down our stuff to wait for our boarding assignment, so I casually say "Hey how's it going?" and he replies "Unh.", no smile, in fact he barely raises his eyes from the newspaper he's glancing at.....maybe a better question would have sufficed. image

the year the Lakers beat Philly for the title, i'm driving west on Ventura Blvd. a couple days after the parade and i see a shiny green Rolls Royce convertible approaching from the rear and whiz on past, and it's Shaq and everyone is honking their horns and waving and he honks and waves back to each and every person he makes eye contact with including me......presumably he was on his way to Leanord Armato's office to help him count their money. image

Wow! The guy is 48 but looks much younger! I would have expected him to have aged badly given his substance abuse issues. Nice story.

A couple of comments/questions were posted earlier about freezing up or what did I talk to Strawberry about.

He was sitting in a roped off area of the airport...not restricted, just a very small roped off area near his gate (I think he was flying to Phoenix or something like that). I honestly think that he was pretty much unrecognized by the few hundred people that were there, because no one was near him. But, I just approached him with daughter in tow and said "Mr. Strawberry"....and he just turned and said "yes?". The conversation was brief, I asked a few questions, where you living these days, are you still with the Mets organization, hope you are well...nothing really deep, then I asked if he would mind if I got a picture of him with my daughter. Like I said in my first post, he was very gracious and approachable.

BPorter knows, but for those who don't, this was at the Charlotte, NC airport. I guess we are lucky in this area, because we do have a good amount of celebs and pro athletes and, comparatively speaking, Charlotte is a fairly small city (600k in the city, maybe 1.5 million in the metro area). We have lots of race guys, football and basketball guys, and a fair amount of celebs that live on Lake Norman. It's not uncommon to see famous people out and about around here, but I have to admit, running into Strawberry was not expected...it did take me about 15 seconds to run through the brain file cabinet to put the name with the face.

I just really think that picture is cool as carp...my daughter is clueless, but she is smiling like she was posing with Miley Cyrus...it gives me a grin each time I look at it!
