    Actually edges see more wear than faces. See Bill Jones explanation which I think is spot on. I'll add that these are specified to be pure copper which is much softer than the bronze that was adopted later and used until 1982. So they wore quite quickly. Edges, however, can work harden. this happens when a metal is yielded. Dropping a coin on it's edge and causing a ding is actually stressing the metal beyond it's yield strength. So the edges, with all their little dings, can become slightly harder. --Jerry
