New all-time most expensive coin. Got one?

I just got an e-mail from Heritage with info about a 1794 PCGS SP66 silver dollar that sold for $7,800,000, or maybe it was $7,850,000.
Speculation is that it could be the first one of these to come off the dies.

Maybe you already knew about this but it's the first I'd heard of the sale.

There have already been extensive discussions about this piece.

I my opinion, it is a nice coin, but it's not the finiest known from what I've seen and I don't see it as the first one that came off the dies. The price seemed to be on the high side to me.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The interesting thing about this, is that for the first time a collector can hope to acquire an example of the world's most valuable coin. That was out of the question for an 1804 dollar or 1913 Liberty nickel, but with the 1794 dollar, the pool of possible owners widens quite a bit.

IMHO, my icon is the most valuable coin and will sell for the most money, when it is sold next.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Julian, I really can't argue with that. Besides, it's bigger than a nickel and easier on my myopic eyes. image

If no one ever mentioned it before, that was a really excellent choice for an icon for a guy who's been around almost as long as that Injun image

    J1905/P1998

The Saint Gauden's Indian Head double eagle. This obverse design ultimately became the regular design for the eagle. This used to be J1776 in earlier editions.

This is one of the most famous and valuable of all the pattern designs. It is struck in high relief but not as high as the Ultra High Relief J1907-J1909/P2000-P2003. This used to be J1778 in earlier editions.

The example in gold J1905/P1998 is unique and has the following pedigree ex Barber, Newcomer, Boyd, Edgar H. Adams, Numismatic Gallery, Farouk, Kosoff, Wilkison, Paramount, A-Mark, Julian M. Leidman, 1981 ANA lot 2434, Hancuck and Harwell, Auction ’84, Private East Coast collector.

There is also an unique example struck in lead J1906/P1999 in the ANS via Martin Kortjohn. This used to be J1777 in earlier editions.

Additional information can be found in Judd, Pollock and David Akers 'United States Gold Pattern' book.
