Quarter Ouncers

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,041 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was messing around with the calculator and Apmex this morning and here are my findings.

The best deal (as far as money spent per ounce) I found for coins in the quarter ounce range was the Mexican 10 Peso coin. I did this based off of buying one coin, not bulk prices. The 10 Peso came in at $12 over spot. Listed below are the numbers I came up with. They are approximate numbers when it comes to the ¢'s of how much over spot the items are. I also didn't search and crunch the numbers on the various European coins in the 1/4oz range because I got bored of doing it. image

US $5 Indian, $367.22, $70 over spot
Chinese Panda, $367-18, $60 over spot
US $5 Liberty, $352.20, $55 over spot
US Eagle, $353.11, $46 over spot
Canadian Maple, $350.09, $43 over spot
SA Krugerrand, $337.89, $31 over spot
Apmex round, $322.13, $15 over spot
Mexican 10 Peso, $308.14, $12 over spot
Mexican Libertad, no info..out of stock
Austrian Philharmonic, no info...out of stock
Australian Kangaroo, no info...out of stock

I have four liberties that are XF-AU and look cleaned. Would love to trade them out for moderns (age, leafs, krugs, etc). If I sold them on ebay does anyone think I'll net enough money after fees to get four quarter oz bullions?

Thanks Cladiator... it would be REALLY cool if you could be so kind as to give us a periodic update... btw: I think modern commems are running around $25 over spot no ogp.

What about adding gold $5 modern commemoratives to the list....same planchet as a $5 half eagle or .24187 ounces of gold.

Indeed, please add modern commemoratives. Apmex has the common dates as $323.19 if you purchase just one (without shipping).

LOL I like the looks of liberties, and bought them strictly as bullion, but the .2418 thing kind of bugs me. I want some well rounded figure like ".25 ounce"

The $5 Libs I priced at Apmex were the cheapest ones they had and labeled as "cleaned or polished" so they'd be comparable to yours. However, with dealing with eBay fees and Paypal fees and finicky bidders I doubt you get enough to buy your new coins outright. You'd likely get almost enough though.

You're all right, should have included the commems.

I'd be willing to pay the extra $40-50 to get all four replaced with a flat quarter ounce rounded number. Krugs, aussies, anything that's a perfect .25

Personally, I don't like buying bullion that doesn't have the metal type, purity and weight on it. I also like the .25 number instead of the random .24???'s. So with that in mind it looks like the best bang for your buck in quarter ouncers would be the Apmex round by far. No info yet for Libertads, Philharmonics and Kangaroos but my experience has shown me they are on the more expensive side and would likely not win in this competition.

I stopped buying from Apmex. Their shipping charges are too high and the credit card charges too, IMO.
When I want gold I go with these 2 dealers.

Gainesville (if paid by cc, by bank wire is cheaper)
    US Eagle $344
    Kangaroo $348
    Philharmonic $351
    Maple $351
    Krugerrand $329

    ProvidentMetals
    US Eagle $345
    Maple $344
    Krugerrand $338
    Philharmonic $342
    Panda $348 (out of stock)
    Mexican 10 peso $308
    British Sovereign $322
    Cuban 5 peso $328

Wow, fate has smiled upon me tonight. Just for $hits and giggles I checked Apmex and found myself looking through the gold Mexican Libertads. Low and behold they had 1 coin in stock. They had zero earlier this evening when I made this post but now had 1, just 1. It was a 1/4 ounce Libertad at that and it was priced at a mere $327 which put it at 2nd best in my chart of 1/4oz'ers with metal type, purity and weight stated, just a tiny bit behind the Apmex round. Very pleased I am.

Good score! I love the gold Libertads! I bought a 1/4 a while ago for 316 shipped, but gold was around 1150.
There is a store in Mexico (on eBay.us) that has them and sometimes they have some fair BIN. Let me know if you want the name.
I bought few coins from them and besides the slow shipping they are reliable.
