Bryce Harper -- How much Ransom do you think Bor-Ass will extort from the Nats?

I say $25 million. He will ask for 50, and they will "settle" on 25.

he will likely take much more time in the minors to develop than Strasburg, so if the Nationals dump more money into him than they did Strasburg, I think their ROI will be less.
  • He will earn exactly what he is worth

Except that Harper has more leverage than Strasburg (in a way) as he can go back to school and re-enter the draft next year. Strasburg could have tried the re-draft approach but playing in the Northern League (or wherever) for a year would not have been beneficial...another year of college ball would not be detrimental to Bryce.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.

You can learn a lot about the extent to which someone understands basic economic principles by gauging their reaction to the name 'Scott Boras'.

The fact is Boras has a bad rep among owners and fans but for some odd reason people keep hiring him. Hmmmmmm, I wonder why that is!?!? As often Boras threads go let me state the obvious, if YOU want to maximize the dollars you get you would hire Boras. It's really simple. If you want to have a nice guy as an agent maybe you pick somebody else but if you want DOLLARS IN YOUR POCKET you pick Boras. He is one of the toughest negotiators out there.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

He also bungled his two biggest clients -- A-Rod and Manny. A-Rod fired him, and his stratgey on Manny turned him into a pariah (yeah, a lot if it was Manny's fault, but part of earning those big commissions is to advise your client on proper negotiations and not let you client act like a big baby).

He is still Arods agent amazingly enough - Arod just seemingly cut him out of the final negotiations with the Yanks. And the Yanks still bid against themselves. My favorite is Boras providing Koufax as a comp for Oliver Perez when the mets resigned him (in his written pamphlet he does for his bigger FA's)...just silly. Still Boras can only lead the stupid GM's to water - he can't make them drink..

So did the Dodgers. Another team would not have paid any more than $15 million per for Manny. Bor-ass somehow makes a lot of ofherwise smart GMs (like Theo Epstein) look dumb, and he eats dumb GMs and owners for lunch.

Borass takes HUGE risks and his clients need to know that when they hire him. It usually pays off though. However, like any aggressive risk taker there will be exceptions. He is the kind of guy that doesn't mind walking away from the negotiation table and taking a chance you will call him the next day. I admire his work.
  • I will say this, the future for this club is exciting for the fans, I cannot remember 2 more hyped (justifiable) players , andf they are gonna play for the same team. Nuts...

Problem is Stras may be in his arbritration season before Harper ever plays.

If they can get Harper signed and in the minors this year, he will probably get his first call-up about a year from now. A-Rod was 18 when he first played for the Mariners IIRC.

Barring a collapse in the minors this season, and early next, I see a 2011 September callup...unless they wait even longer to delay arbitration. The move the RF (for now) is really going to speed Harper's road to the majors. Arod and Griffey both were 18/19 when called up I think.

I think Theo does a good enough job of it himself! He is really starting to amaze me at his stupidity.

I hate Boras, worse negotiator ever!

I can't imagine he'll get more than the $15 million Strasburg got.

As for when he might join the Nationals, Yahoo and the guys on ESPN reported that the Nationals are looking at 3 years which would make Harper 20 when he debuts in MLB.

From this article on Yahoo: "The Harper years should intersect with Strasburg’s about halfway. Rizzo said the organization chose to stick him in the outfield because “it will accelerate his development” and lessen the beating he would take as a catcher. It makes sense, and it doesn’t. The thought of a 40-homer catcher is awfully tantalizing to throw away before a kid turns 18. It’s also proof of the ever-present power of Scott Boras, Harper’s agent who orchestrated the permanent position switch, who will charge the Nationals somewhere in the neighborhood of $12 million for the honor of signing Harper."

3 Years? If he hits 70 home runs in AAA next year, are the Nats going to keep him down there?

  • << <i>A-Rod fired him >>

Are there any references showing that Boras has not been earning revenue from Rodriguez since that last payraise in 07-08?

  • Harper has levarage as he can back to college. Can a move like that backfire? If he gets hurt, it could. Can't see Harper satying in the minors for more then 2 years.

I guess I'm a little more pessimistic on him than most of you guys. I don't think hitting Junior College pitchers well is enough to automatically translate to immediate success in AAA. I think 3 years is reasonable for a 17-year-old kid.

Not AAA levels, but the level of JuCo ball he was playing was comparable to most D1 programs/Single A ball. I'd be surprised if Harper ever saw Gulf Coast League action like most kids his age do.

Correct. He may get to AA this year, and then AA/AAA next year with a call-up to the Show in late August.
