My set just moved into the #1 1858 business strike spot on the NGC Registry. I am mainly going for the silver and the FEC, but I may try to get a couple of gold pieces (most likely the $1 P mint and the $20 S mint). Here's the link.
The next guy on the registry has just 2 coins.....#3 on that list has a single coin. I guess its nice to be #1 at something...no matter how insignificant that something may be.

Gecko, I can't afford to blow the bucks that some of those single coins call for. I've been building that set for quite literally longer than you've been on the boards. If you want to do something right it takes time.

In the grand scheme of things it is not important at all. Still, I'd be lying if I didn't say it's kind of fun. Truth be told, I was not trying to build the # 1 set, but just trying to put together a nice group of 1858 business strike material. I will be continuing (the good Lord willing) to build up the set simply because I enjoy doing it.
For me, the most important set that I've put together is my Franklin toner business strike set. It is based on what I think is superior eye appeal for the given date/mm. It is currently ranked #16. I take far more pride in that set than in this 1858 set, yet I know it will never be a top ten set simply because of what I consider the qualifications to be in the set are different than how the Registry awards points.

IMO the registry's are set up for people to show their collections and competition to acquire the finest sets...Just a fun thing giving people goals in numismatics...Different strokes for different folks...
"Realone" you do hit on some real points...Bottom line is the registry`s are set up the way they are set up with the points...No different then no price guides for toned coins....Perhaps someday that will change but for now thats what we have... Better then nothing and still fun...Just my opinion....
Realone, you have brought up a very good question. Why does it matter? The answer is it doesn't, and even though NGC says he is #1 he really isn't.
Not taking away anything from your set skyman, it has very nice coins. But if Gardner's (see #1 seated quarter set over at ngc) 1858-O quarter was his only entry in the 1858 mint set he would be number 1. Yes thats right, his one quarter is worth 10k registry points, now throw the 58, and 58-s quarters in and he is really on top.

The Set Registry is a virtual Whitman Album - giving the same sort of endorphin reward that we used to get as kids when we filled a hole in the album. It's nothing to turn your nose up at - I'm sure it's responsible for hooking at least half the coin collectors today over 40. Lol
I look at the registry as an on-line presentation of a collection that is most likely hidden away in the bank vault. Without a set registry, who would see it?
Edited to add: the competition factor is an on-line example of a game called whist. You don't have to play if you don't want to.
When you put a lot of time, effort, patience and hard earned money into a collection, it's nice to be able to show it off without risk of theft. If you get some nice compliments along the way, then even better.
