My Newest Project

I was thinking that since I have complete sets of Booker T. Washington and Carver/Washington Commems why not go a little further. There are, unless I am mistaken, only 5 coins portraying African Americans I would finish out the set. I ordered an 09-P & D Duke Ellington State Quarter and now only need the Jackie Robinson and the Black Patriots Dollars. I purchased MS-66 DC quarters to keep with the grades I have in the older Commems. The Robinson and Black Patriots will probably be MS-69's. Your thoughts if any.

I think it's an original and interesting concept for a "set." I wonder if you could make a "custom" display when you're finished....

How about the Little Rock dollar? Only shows feet, but they trod mighty steps.

Have the buffalo soldiers ever been depicted on an American coin? ...or medal?

I used to hunt out of Ft. Clark (Brackettville, TX) in my younger years. Buffalo soldiers operated out of there quite heavily back in the wild, wild west days. Man, they had to have been some tough hombres. Of course, a number of prominent, future generals passed through the fort at one time or another, also. sheesh, there's too much cool history to keep up with!

I know the Tuskegee Airmen have a US Mint Medal and so does Collin Powell. There are others also but heavens one can spead themselves too thin while collecting.

In keeping with the BTW and C/W sets in MS only. I bought the 2 DC quarters in circulation strikes instead of the Satin coins.

Edited to add: I don't think I'll do proofs. Like you say it tends to get expensive.

Bessie Coleman concept dollar - design presented to DCDAC - was voted second after Sacagawea for the theme of the new "golden" dollar coin of 2000:

dcarr that is one good looking coin you have designed. I liked your Sacagawea designs too. Maybe one of these days soon we will see a dcarr design on an US coin.

    Good Luck

It would be great to see some of dcarr's designs on US coins... unlikely though, since there appears to be no chance of getting real art accepted. Cheers, RickO

Cool idea for a set! Don't Forget - The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site will get an America The Beautiful (TM) quarter in 2021 (!) Depending on how it is depicted, it may fit your set too.

Yes it will most definitely be a fit. Although not a particular living person but a group of real people, like the Little Rock Commem.

I have told this story on here before but my cat's vet is a graduate of the Tuskegee Institute. His father was one of the Tuskegee Airmen. When the medals were first offered by the Mint I ordered several and gave the good Dr. a couple of them. The first time I ever saw him show any emotion. He said he was going to send one to his brother in California. I went to the bank and got my full sets of Booker T. Washington Commems and my Carver/Washington set from the SDB and took them to his office and showed them to him. He said he had heard of them but never seen any. He is the only person to besides myself to ever see both entire sets.
