A little more from Laura/Legend regarding (in my words) the PNG, Coin Dcotors and exercising restrai

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
From Legend's website (edited with a spelling correction or two) :

"I have noticed that on some chat-rooms there is talk about boycotting the PNG, outing this guy or that, and just doing things people really should not. I am in NO way in support of any of that. While I strongly believed the PNG needed a bold kick in their rumps, I do not support any harmful activity. When I used the word "harassment" it was taken out of context. My meaning was write letters to the major organizations, talk to your dealer, make noise that you want doctoring to stop-not torture the fools. I am writing this totally without any prompting other than what I have been reading."

I'm sure the fools appreciate this clarification.

I know my anger got me too caught up in all of this. But I know what I see. I know what I have lost money on. I see these liars and cheats at every show I go to. They should not be telling collectors how it is-we need to be telling them.

Today I wrote a letter to the editor of Coin World. I'm going to write the PNG Board. Someone has to do something.

Wouldn't it be nice if we all cooled down a notch and let the process work itself out. I am a collector. Of course I want to see all the coin doctors out of business. But the way this will happen is when their "doctoring" is no longer profitable. I believe PCGS has a strong case and overtime will prevail. I believe places like THIS coin forum serve a major service in that the comments made by many collectors tend to support the fact that the hobby needs to rid itself of coin doctors. I understand why most dealers chose not to comment on this subject. If I were a dealer I wouldn't comment either. This country has lawyers and they like to make money too. I complement Laura for her publicity. It WILL help. Let us just be patient and within a year or two I believe most coin doctors will no longer be promoting their trade because most potential clients will no longer be interested.

I believe we should all remain calm. The lawsuit is a legal matter and will progress at its own pace. Writing thoughtful, clear, respectful, but forceful letters to the proper agencies will help. However, neither the lawsuit nor the letters will put the coin doctors out of business. There is just too much money to be made and too many neophytes willing to part with their money. The doctors will improve, they will skirt the TPG's, if they lose, and business will continue to be profitable. As long as people are willing to pay high prices, but not learn the intricacies of numismatics (i.e. counterfeits, tooling, AT etc), then the doctors will have clients. Until their market is closed down, they will be with us. Cheers, RickO

I think that's the most intelligent thing this girl said on this subject to date. These threads are having a way of getting locked down, as well as completely disappearing, around here, should any of you have bothered to have taken the time off to notice. I don't blame our gracious host, one bit, for that; if anything, I just wonder what took them so long. This is a CU lawsuit, and a CU forum, but when the rhetoric crosses the line from simple rooting for the home team to fanaticism, it's time something was done about those threads, as they're embarrassments. Let's all just tone it down a little bit, and try real hard to act like grown-ups. And, while we're at it, it wouldn't hurt us too much were we to exercise some tolerance for the differing opinions of others (yeah, I think that would be real big of us, too). Thanks.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as the case may be, I'm not willing to tolerate people trying to rob me by doctoring or (knowingly) selling doctored coins. Even the PNG is against it as per their rules:

"PNG members are strictly forbidden to sell coins/currency that has been mis-represented in ANY way."

But all I see is ... well nothing actually. Their partial repsonse has been

"The board will monitor the progress of the complaint and react promptly, appropriately and in accordance with the organization's bylaws."

Which I take to mean that, absent a case being resolved in a court of law, they will do nothing.

Calm down there big fella image

I promise to not spill any beverage anywhere in your vicinity image...

Please understand that I grew up in the 60's and we used to have sit-down strikes and boycotts for many reasons... whenever possible... and often for really silly issues ... so my mention of a boycott was indeed a knee jerk idea and a bit over the top...

Besides... there are too many folks who belong to the PNG who I do like and respect... I would not want to boycott such folks and always want to be able to talk to Aki and Andy... you, Wei and Julian as well as others...

I like and respect you guys and will never hold your membership in the PNG against you... OK? image

To all you "good guys" in the PNG and to Laura... I offer this... keep on being you and continue doing the things that you do... our hobby and the business of coins is a better place for it...

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

I'm still waiting for PCGS to add the name of the chump to the complaint that I observed patting putty onto a Saint at a Baltimore show a few years ago, just before rushing an order of his to the TPG. He certainly is not a low profile coin doctor either.

Ditto for the one who after buying a rare and totally orig MS64 seated quarter from a dealer I had consigned the coin to......was seen in the Baltimore convention center bathroom dipping and puttying the coin. Sad thing was that he did get the 65 grade but ruined an otherwise probable condition census coin. Unfortunately PCGS plus did not exist at that time.

Care to share the coin's date?

I believe PNG's official position at this point in time is entirely appropriate. In fact, CU having 120 days from the date of the filing of this complaint to pull the trigger so to speak on these party defendants, I wouldn't be too surprised at all if they're reconsidering the wisdom of that one real long and hard right now. Just call it a feeling I have...
