So after you've finished...

After you complete a set or a collecting goal... what do you do with it? Sell? move on to something else? Look at it periodically?

Share it. Expand on it. Upgrade pieces (if you want).

Selling is an option if you REALLY want to collect a different series and need the $$$ to get'er done

If I ever finish one I'll let you knowimage. Actually I have finished a couple of series(gold indian head quarter eagles, and a vf merc dime set) and and close to finishing a 7070 type set. I still have the series that I did finish, I like to pull them out and review them from time to time.

I finished off Lincolns a couple of years ago and just sold the majority of the set. I have a few pieces here and there but nothing worth a whole lot of money. I came one piece short of completing an Indian Head Cent collection and I'm doing the same there as well... I guess I'm just listless in my collecting direction these days. I still have the majority of my type set... L

I just recently finished a cheap MS-63+ set of Franklin Halves...most of them RAW. My wife said, "Now what?" I said....Now what, indeed!...and went on to working on other sets... Havin' Fun! image

I finished my registry Franklins proof and MS versions and am constantly looking to upgrade coins.
After upgrading a coin, I go into selling mode for extras and have become good at selling.
I also have an active Dansco of raw Walking Liberty Half's. First, objective was a short set, then a long-short and now... 7 holes away from
a complete set. I love it as for me... so long as I stay employed... and my allowable spend on coins continue, my sets do not remain idle.

I recall when I finished my FE/Indian cent set. Once I got the last coin in (1863), I was elated. For about a week. Then I sold it so I could finish my Lincoln set. Same thing happened.
It was kinda like: OK, now what? That's when I decided I would not finish any more sets of a single series. My only "sets" now are Proof PAE's and a 7070 set I'm working on. I like to show that to folks who show an interest in coins to show the VARIETY of coinage the U.S. has made.

What was the statement the caddy made in "The Greatest Game Ever Played" ? "Golf is a game that can be played, never won."

Isn't coin collecting like that. Especially collecting sets, they can be collected never finished. What with upgrades and looking to upgrade, you never really finish a set.

I finished off a few low grade sets that I began as a kid - eventually sold them off. It was a good learning lesson on how much I re-cooped.

Even when I finish a set, (Only close on Clad dimes...three away!...not counting non-circulating issues) I will continually be on the lookout for upgrades for most likely the rest of my life.

Coins that have gotten an upgrade will either go into my spares container, traded or sold (except no one seems to be interested) or if they are not in the greatest of shape, spent.

I still have all the raw sets I've finished (e.g. Merc dimes, Washington Quarters, Peace Dollars, Franklin Halves, 20th Century Type); however, I've broken-up and sold-off coins from Registry sets.

After you have completed your set, enjoy it and start on another. Cheers, RickO

In my other collecting areas I usually get to a certain level where I have some of the best examples available. At that point I generally enjoy them for a few years, and then start to sell off pieces to pay for new interests, keeping some as great examples. In coin collecting however, I will never have the best examples, well maybe a few, so I will always be looking to upgrade. Pieces that don't bring as much enjoyment as they once did will be sacrificed for the greater good.image
