  • Looks like it may have only possible to have been an 'authentic' grade before restoration. So for a person spending that kind of money, they probably restored it to have eye appeal.

    From the restoration report:
All four corners are badly worn and rounded
Edges are worn with fiber and ink loss. Surface dirt, unknown staining, and accretions.
Top and side edges of card have been trimmed. The white borders and printed dark line have been trimmed off unevenly on front and design on back is missing at top and side edges.
    Large loss of printed orange
Crease at lower right with loose fragment
    Scratches with abrasions.
    Verso (back)
Old paper fragment adhered with unknown adhesive
Pressure sensitive at center from old hinging.
Scrapbook paper was removed during treatment.

Interesting. I would love to see high res scans of the card before and after restoration.

Based on description this sounds like it was the "diecut" card sold by Robert Edwards many years ago. All that was left of the card was the bust and name having all the orange background along with the left, right, top borders cut off.

I think Kb is right, I never really deciphered the work done on it til now. It was garbage before. In this case..... good it was restored, but I usually wouldnt agree with doing that.

PS. Here is where it was offered recently (with better description of restoration process), and it didnt reach reserve.
    Mears T206 Wagner restored

Seller must be trying something different with the eBay auction.

His description makes me believe he is a casual collector not up on vintage cards IMO

Funny how he calls it the "Rarest Card on the Planet" in the eBay auction.
    There are actually thousands of cards rarer from that 1910 era, ie. every single T204, T208, T209-1, T209-2, T210, T211, T212-1, T213-1, T213-3, T214, T215-1, T215-2, T216-1, T216-2, T216-3, T217 etc. are rarer than the T206 Wagner.

On a related note, here is a T206 Wagner (also from last 2 months) with the restoration reversed, ............ good for the owner image
    Legendary T206 Wagner "unrestored"

IMO this one is now worth 2-3X what the other one is worth........ even though they are both in "A" holders.

This would be a perfect card for sportscardtheory to pick up for his quest once he's done flipping Hideo Nomo cards.

I could only ever afford an authentic grade one and personally would like it to be restored.

The Mears Wagner card is back on the auction block. SCP has it in their latest catalog.

Not sure how ethical this would be, but my guess is that it might have reached the reserve if he HAD NOT included the restoration invoice. In my opinion, it was "too much information". The PSA flip says "RESTORED". That should be enough.

Not sure I would do that. I'm just sayin'.
