1856 FEC, good example of net grading.

This coin appears to EF40 feather details. I'm guessing do to it's status as a popular key, the rim problems net graded it down to VF20.

Arguably, it's a bad example of net grading. If the choice were no grade or a net grade, I understand the idea. But here they could have written EF Details Net VF quite easily. That clues the buyer into the problem, but also points out that the details are higher than VF. That's more honest all around.

Good, bad, my point being how TPG's have sometimes overlooked problems on key or rare coins in order to get them into a problem free holder.

If you want to see quite a bit of net grading, look at Draped Bust material.

Net grading is even more subjective than grading. XF details- Holed or Vf details - Edge bumps is much more explanatory than XF details - Net F. Net tells nothing about what the buyer is going to get. I believe ANACS did away with net grading because the dealers did not want to explain how an XF details - Net PO01 warrants a Fine price tag. I would very much like to see details grading at the tpg level.
