This MS66 1972-D PegLeg arrived today and quite frankly, I'm surprised there wasn't some IKE sniper hiding in the bushes during this Teletrade auction!

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    What's the rarity and value for a Peg Leg of this date?

    << <i>What's the rarity and value for a Peg Leg of this date? >>

    Let's just say they are uncommon in MS66 and the only one's I've seen belong to someone else. Otherwise, this would have been my 2nd one!

    1972 is actually an interesting year in that a design variety pegleg existed with the Proof and Business Strike silver coins yet the copper nickel clad coins all had the ODV-001 serifed R's.

    Or...........one would think.

    Consider the following R's:

    image

    1 = 1972 Type 1
    2 = 1972 Type 3
    3 = 1972-D
    4 = 1972-D

    Focusing on the left leg of the R, notice how straight #1 is compared to #2.
    Now compare #2 with #3 and #4

    Note the raised potion of the leg in #4 as noted below. It also exists in #3 but with less clarity.

    image

    Now consider this R.

    image

    It's from a 1971-S Silver Business Strike.

    At this point it's relatively easy to visualize the 1972-D R hubbed on top of a 1971-S R creating speculation that the two designs got hubbed together, thereby creating a "hybrid" R.

    Personally, I do not believe that the R in photo #4 is the "result" of or a "stage" of die abrasion but more the result of two different hubs being used on a master die.

    What do you think?

    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    Pic #1 looks like it has some notching at the bottom of the leg. Is this a DDO?

    I saw that as well but could find no other evidence of doubling.

    Anywhere.

    ran across this on ebay and was wondering doesn't it look like they put a piece of paper saying peg leg or is that the way the pcgs holder is ? thks and congrats did you cherrypick that 1982 ms64 breens kennedy halve this past week ? http://cgi.ebay.com/1972-D-Eisenhower-IKE-Dollar-PegLeg-PCGS-MS65-/310222258026?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item483aafff6a

    Anywhere."

    Lee, I discovered this variety years ago, and sold the 1st one to Wiles. Check IGWT; you should see some slight doubling in WE and in TRUST; I mentioned it to him, but he wantred to see an earlier die state.
    Edit to add the pic of the W(WE); note the notch on top, in the center.

    Since PCGS doesn't attribute these, I like to put tags on my holders indicating what it is.

    As for the doubling, I won't dispute you but as I said, I saw no other evidence of doubling.

    Well shouldn't you have to say that it your ad? i am sure to any newbie that looks at that says ok a pcgs graded coin that is certified, i think its kinda misleading to make it look like its a certified peg leg from pcgs when they don't even reconize them..... image

    image That thought never crossed my mind since the sticker is not "inside" the slab.

    Just because a TPG doesn't attribute a variety, doesn't mean that it's not there.... If selling, I note the variety, provide good pics and also write "not attributed" in the ads header. Lee, I see that your 72P Pegger is also in LDS, but do see that the ends of the top arms of E are notched on the ends; not for nothing, but your 72D is a beauty.

    That thought never crossed my mind since the sticker is not "inside" the slab. well by my first post you can tell i was asking about this coin not knowing it was yours, just thought it to be odd with the paper on the holder thats why i asked, But after thinking about it and looking at another one of your ads it just seemed to me that if one didnt know (newbie) they would be confused by the way it looks and is written up, but maybe i just need to send in 10 of my skeltons lincoln fingers and when i get them back i just stick a piece of paper in that spot, than post them on ebay the same as yours, hmmmmm that might be an idea image can you print me some labels?
