half of a T206 Honus Wanger

Hey dose anybody remember the add in sports collectors digest maybe 12 or 15 years ago. there was a T206 honus wagner it only half a card I think it was graded by PSA as authentic but cant remember for sure. I remember 707 sports cards having it and wanted $5000.00 for it at the time i wonder ware that card is now and if it is worth more then the 5k he was asking for it then.

I have no recollection of half a wanger. I'm sure half a wanger isn't worth anywhere near the amount a whole wanger is so not sure that the wanger was ever worth the $5,000. But I guess it all boils down to whatever one feels a wanger is worth (even if it's half a wanger).

Never seen an authentic 1/2 Wagner. Ive seen many reprint burnt, torn, ripped, trimmed, and trashed to try to fool, but they never do.

I have scans of close to 30 different authentic T206 Wagners, if you can locate a scan of this 1/2 card, LMK, Id like to see it.
  • i dont have a scan of it. I know i remember seeing it in old SCD many years back and i am pretty sure 707 was the one selling it and i think it was graded authentic i think by PSA. and he was asking 5k for it you could still see most of his face and body and name i think

Here's a half of a Wagner. The back half of the card was torn off, leaving only the front.

    OK, I made that up.
  • I think it was a 1997 or 1998 issue of SCD with tony gwynn on the front
  • no this was torn or ripped in half some i think the right side of his face was missing and along with his right shoulder

For having the name Cardexpert, you sure aren't sure about much it seems.

    tough crowd this morning.
Why not just email Levi- he reads the board, and is always quick with info when asked.

I've personally held the 1/2 Wagner card that the poster is referring to. I'm not 100% sure what show I was at, but I think it was the National Convention in Houston, Texas in the mid 90's at the George R. Brown Convention Center. I remember thinking it would be really cool to own, as at that time, I didn't think there would ever come a time that i could possibly afford a "whole" Wagner, and even if I could, that I could ever justify spending the dollars required to own a "whole" Wagner. The dealer was Levi Bleam of 707 and the card was slabbed as well. In hindsight, I wish I had bought it as it would have made a helluva conversation piece over the years. I have no idea what happened to that card over the years as I haven't seen it offered for sale the last couple and I was out of the hobby for a lot of the interim years.

    It's cardexpert1980. There isn't a question about 1980 Topps cards that he can't answer.
  • For $5 000 you could buy like one-third of a Stephen Strasburg card

I'm thinking cardexpert1980 misplaced a zero because I find it hard to believe even half a Wagner would be $5,000...more like $50,000

  • i am positve it was 5k this was before the PSA 1 wagners were even close to 100k. maybe the card is worth 25 or 50k today. but 707 wanted 5k for it back in 97 or 98

There was a half wagner only the bottom part of the card. I know what you are talking about. I think it was auctioned off in 2000-2001 and if I recall right it went for 32,000
Not sure who won it but it was a major auction house that sold it. Might have been mastro.

I'm still trying to figure out what a WANGER (as spelled in the title) is?

And I vaguely remember a WAGNER in SCD and probably have the issue but there is no way I would be able to find it.

    I would agree!

If anyone is able to provide more information, or even a picture, I would be really interested in seeing what this 1/2 Wagner looked like.

It was the bottom of the wagner. It went up to his chin and you could see the full name. No back damage it was just ripped down the middle. It sold for 32,000.00 about 10 years ago at auction. I think Mastro auctioned it off

The card that I held was the left side of the card. It wasn't the bottom, so maybe there are a couple 1/2 Wagners floating around out there.
